Hello lovelies!

I'm due towards the end of the month and we do not know if we are having a boy or a girl. We are pretty settled on a girls name but really struggling with names for a wee boy.

We are not fans of traditional biblical names such as David, James etc. Nor names such as Henry or Charlie. There are obviously exceptions (fond of Noah for example) but holds quite true.

What we do like is natural names or names with meanings that refer back to natural things.
So for example Jasper or Glen would be obvious direct links but I'm more interested in what names people can think of that have natural meanings. So thinking of ones like Aiden meaning "little fire" or Wesley meaning "West meadow".

Any suggestions welcome, partner and I are just brainstorming and looking for inspiration.

My son has a friend called Fenn which I think is lovely (he’s a great lad as well!).

Rowan is an obvious one. What about Ash like the tree? I know it's short for other names. Heath like heath ledger.

AdaColeman · 09/06/2022 12:19

Bryn
Ness
Tor
Craig
Clifford

Thanks for the suggestions so far!
Douglas - out due to being the name of a very creepy uncle.

Not heard of a Fenn! Thanks for this one.

I do like Rowan and know both male and female. We have a very close friend with a 3 year old Rowan so that probably rules it out. Same with Ash except I have a close relative called Ashley. Contender as a middle name though.

Oscar - friend of deer
Eoghan / Owen - yew tree
Ewan - might also be connected to yew trees
Dara / Darragh - oak tree

minuette1 · 09/06/2022 12:32

How about Zephyr (wind), Silas (of the forest), Jericho (moon), Bryn (hill), Elwood (elder forest), Aster (star), Conall (wolf), Drake (dragon).

I love Jasper and Rowan as names though, if our next DC is a boy we'll be using one of these :)

stormelf · 09/06/2022 12:42

Ooh Fenn is lovely! If I was planning on having more children that would definitely be on the list. I like Tor or Vale

No not ash, or Ashley. The meaning is horrific. Naming a child after a dead baby buried face down to appease the god of the Earth

goldfinchonthelawn · 09/06/2022 12:44

Silvian or Sylvian means of the forest
Alfred means King of the Elves!

PoemBeatrice · 09/06/2022 12:54

I'm partial to Fox and Hawk
Sylvan
Harley - hare's meadow
Florian
Samson - play on Herbew word for sun

saynotoo · 09/06/2022 13:43

Garnet
Reed

AmandaMirandaPanda · 09/06/2022 15:50

Arden - from an old Gaelic word meaning "high place"
Columba/Callum - dove
Innes/Inis - island
Ivo/Ivor/Yves and maybe Evander - relate to yew trees or perhaps yew boughs
Jasper
Kai - sea
Linden
Lonán - blackbird
Oisín - (little) deer
River
Stellan - (star/from the stars) is I think generally considered kind of old fashioned in Sweden but is probably unusual enough in English-speaking countries to avoid stereotyping.

Are you Scottish ? I note your use of “wee”. I like the name Rannoch for a boy (it means bracken) much better with a Scottish accent “Rannocchhhh” than the English “Rannock”pronounciation!

PleaseYourselfandEatTheCrusts · 09/06/2022 19:11

Brock - Badger
Todd - Fox
Dale
Eric means Heather, I think
Basil
Herbie
Jay

Tbh I don't like it it's just all I could think of so I won't hold a grudge if you decide it's awful 😁

AliBaliBears · 10/06/2022 12:36

Nairn

Origin:Scottish. Meaning:river with Alder trees. Nairn is a boy's name of Scottish origin inspired by an ancient town near Inverness. Meaning "river with Alder trees," Nairn finds its calling in the local river that flows from the Monadhliath Mountains.

bloominglovelyorange · 11/06/2022 10:10

@minuette1 Jasper is lovely, I love it's meaning
my baby girl is called Rowan. Word of warning that RoMan with an M is the top fastest rising boy name (now top 30 but still rising fast) and so there's always a Roman in her baby classes (2 Romans at nursery) and it gets confusing and makes me a bit disappointed as I wouldn't have chosen the name if I'd realised

Fraser is a strawberry plant I think

SnowdropFox · 13/06/2022 15:57

Thanks for the responses everyone! I haven't had a chance to reply as I caught a lovely bug and could barely keep my eyes open! Perfect timing really being this pregnant!

@discoohno yup, guilty as charged. Scottish as they come. I love Rannoch actually, thanks for that!

Lots of great suggestions. I do like some of the literal names such as Hawk but just don't think we are brave enough haha Adding Conell, Innes and a few others to the long list!

Add Cosmo to your list if you’re Scottish. Scottish origins (name came over via the Duke of Gordon / Medicis).
