Please help me refine my (far too) long list of girl’s names - any awful connotations I should know of?! Current favourites in bold.

Ada
Eliza
Elizabeth (Libby)
Fern
Freya
Georgina (Georgie)
Harriet (Hattie)
Lara
Maggie
Mara
Megan
Molly
Nora
Ottilie (Ottie/Tillie)
Penelope (Penny/Nell)
Phoebe
Sadie
Tabitha (Tabby)

Thanks! X

As you had a few names in bold as your favourites, isn't that your own shortlisting done for you? Its much more important to go with what you like than what we like!

However, for the record:
Ada - like it. Sweet and old fashioned but also quite cool and quirky.
Eliza - not keen. Not sure why as it's a good solid name. The 'lies' sound, maybe.
Elizabeth (Libby) - like Elizabeth but not keen on any of the nicknames.
Fern - not keen.
Freya - it's ok. I feel like I should like this a lot more than I do but just never have. A bit insubstantial maybe.
Georgina (Georgie) - love it. Georgina is pretty but strong and Georgie is cool and versatile.
Harriet (Hattie) - it's ok.
Lara - love it. Feels like a more modern, elegant, European and less common Laura.
Maggie - really strongly dislike this. The aggie sound is just ugly to my ears.
Mara - like it. Automatically think Mara Wilson but that's no bad thing.
Megan - quite like it. Almost retro now.
Molly - quite like it.
Nora - not keen. Bit old lady but it's probably old lady chic now.
Ottilie (Ottie/Tillie) - not keen
Penelope (Penny/Nell) - quite like it. Prefer the full name. Penny is ok, really don't like Nell.
Phoebe - really like it.
Sadie - love it.
Tabitha (Tabby) - not keen. Makes me think of a cat. I do like Talitha though.

My top choice would be Sadie followed by Georgina then Lara.

@blameitonthecaffeine thanks! In theory yes, it would be my own short listing done - but the ‘in bold’s change on a daily basis 😂same with DH.

Lara is the stand-out favourite for me. Was on my shortlist

thefarrierswife · 09/06/2022 16:27

Love Harriet nn Hattie and Tabitha nn Tabby

musicviking1 · 09/06/2022 21:38

Eliza/Elizabeth and Freya for me, the only one I can't stand is Lara, sounds harsh and reminds me of the name Tara.

Ada - lose, will blemd into a sea of Ava/Edie/Eva/Evie/Ida's
Eliza - lose and go with Elizabeth nickname Eliza
Elizabeth - Keep, with nn Eliza
Fern - keep, very pretty
Freya - lose, boring
Georgina (Georgie) - lose, to me a less nice Harriet
Harriet (Hattie) - keep
Lara - lose, boring
Maggie - lose, cute but it's a nickname
Mara - lose, boring
Megan - lose, dated and boring
Molly - lose, boring
Nora - quite cool but MN hates it.
Ottilie (Ottie/Tillie) - I hate it! Will date horribly
Penelope (Penny/Nell) - pretty but not as good as the others so lose
Phoebe - lovely but far too popular so lose
Sadie - pretty, a bit quirky, I'd keep
Tabitha (Tabby) - keep! Love it

Thanks everyone! Always thought I didn’t care at all what I had, but now I really hope I have a girl because there are so many more girl’s names I like than boy’s.

I’m a bit biased (I’m an Eliza) but I think it’s a great name and people still sometimes compliment my name when I introduce myself. I also like that it’s not too frilly and it’s easy to pronounce. It’s not a very common name where I am from what pps have said it is in other areas.

I adore Sadie, Harriet, Phoebe, Nell and Mara.

I’m not so keen on Ottilie, Nora or Maggie (always reminds me of Maggie Thatcher but that might just be me!). As a pp said Zoe Sugg recently named her daughter Ottilie and it is very popular. I also find it a bit twee.

You have a lovely taste in names though, I might have to steal some for my non-existent children 😂.

mirrorballer · 16/06/2022 01:12

I really love Harriet, Phoebe, Nora, Ottilie and Nell (but don't love Penelope).
The others are fine.
The only name I really dislike is Sadie.

mirrorballer · 16/06/2022 01:12

Oh and love Eliza too.

HisHX · 16/06/2022 08:24

@sixthformdropout thank you! I’ve always loved Eliza, since watching ‘The Wild Thornberrys’ as a child, when I thought she was the coolest girl ever!
