Are lily and Lucy too close to be sibling names?

I’m having a girl in august, I have a Lucy now and I am thinking about calling my next Lily, I live traditional names so these fit perfectly together but I’m just concerned they may get confused by other people because they both begin with L and end in Y. Am I overthinking or are they too close?

Two lovely names.

SummaLuvin · 31/05/2022 18:09

IMO too close.

loulou2021 · 31/05/2022 18:10

I don't think they're too close at all. I think they go really well together

Elizabethdelver11 · 31/05/2022 18:11

My husband made a point how it would be like puttin Madeline and madison together because they are SO similar in sound.

I agree Madeline and Madison are too close but Lucy and Lily sound quite different to me

DramaAlpaca · 31/05/2022 18:21

They are probably just different enough.

I don't find either of them twee on their own, but they are slightly twee together.

MerryMarigold · 31/05/2022 18:32

I think too close. Quite an effort to remember whose who. I used to know Jessica and Jennifer sibs and it was really difficult!

Madeline and Madison sound the same until the last syllable (at least in my accent) and share an obvious nickname of Maddy, of me that makes them more similar than Lily and Lucy and completely unacceptable as sibling names.

Lily and Lucy do sound more different, but they start and end in the and sound, like Elise and Emily. My perspective is there are so many nice names out there it is entirely avoidable to have ones so close.

MerryChristmasToYou · 31/05/2022 18:37

Too similar.

pompomseverywhere · 31/05/2022 18:42

Totally fine to have

Greensleeves · 31/05/2022 18:43

I don't think they're too close at all. They go very nicely together.

RoseMartha · 31/05/2022 18:56

I know sisters called Lily and Lucy so I think it is not an issue.

Palavah · 31/05/2022 18:58

What about calling her Lilian or Elizabeth and shortening to Lily?

Goldfishmountainclimber · 31/05/2022 19:11

Yes, too close. Half the letters are the same in both names.

orangeisthenewpuce · 31/05/2022 19:13

No. They don't sound anything like each other

Benjispruce4 · 31/05/2022 19:17

They’re fine. You will get any two of your children’s names mixed up regardless. My two are completely different but I’m always calling them the wrong one, especially when I’m annoyed!

MumofSpud · 31/05/2022 19:18

I think they are both ok to use!

Benjispruce4 · 31/05/2022 19:19

Lucy and Luke would be harder as you make the same sound at the start. I know of someone who had twins called Justine and Justin!!!!

WeasilyPleased · 31/05/2022 22:28

I like the Lilian suggestion of @Palavah doesn't sound so story bookish.

Germolenequeen · 31/05/2022 22:30

Not all - lovely together

rnsaslkih · 31/05/2022 22:31

I think they are fine

IAmSantaOhYesIAm · 31/05/2022 22:35

I think they’re too similar, how about milly or tilly instead?

Luredbyapomegranate · 31/05/2022 22:56

They are too close.

Also it’s quite a twee combo - Lily and Lucy sound slightly like two junior housemaids in Downton Abbey.

Esther, Charlotte, Emma, Alice, Felicity, Eliza(beth), Ida, Harriet, Clara, Elsbeth, Matilda, Caitlin, Adelaide, Honor, Edith, Verity, Anna, Eleanor, Jane and Frances all go quite well with Lucy, I think
