Middle name for Beatrice

We have chosen the first name ‘Beatrice’ if our baby is a girl, but we are struggling to come up with a middle name. We have a very long double-barrelled surname that starts with a T (think along the lines of Turner-Parkinson), so we don’t want anything too long.

We quite like classic names and flower/nature inspired names.

Please suggest away!!

Beatrice Eliza

I like Joy or Rose (Mumsnet doesn't like Rose but I don't know many with it as a middle name and it's beautiful!)

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 26/05/2022 00:10

Nothing beginning with J. BJ .... nah....

sunflowerdaisyrose · 26/05/2022 00:11

@Lessofallthisunpleasantness that's a good point, our son is Ben and we decided again Benjamin James for that reason!

Arenanewbie · 26/05/2022 00:15

my vote for Beatrice Ava or Beatrice Ann, will go well with suggested surname

I can’t lie, this did cross my mind when I gave my son Ben a middle name beginning with J, but I went ahead anyway because I’m not 12 years old.

PinkSyCo · 26/05/2022 04:06

In fact my DD and I even gave my grandson the nickname BJ when he was still in her womb, even though his first name turned out not to start with the initial B. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think middle names are nice if they have a meaning to you, either because of someone you know or because of the name meaning. It's nice to explain that to children as they grow up. It's so rarely used (when baby is first born and when you get married!) all in one go that what it 'sounds like' is completely unimportant. How about... Asking a grandparent for suggestions, naming after your female grandparent or a 'family name', using a name which means brave, loved or kind.... So many possibilities but only you know what's important to you.

I agree with this! My partner and I couldn’t quite agree on middle names (I wanted her to have two after two great grandmothers, OH thought we should chose one) so we just announced her by her first name while we negotiated. Not a single person (other than very close family) has asked what her middle names are. Come to think of it, in my Nct group I couldn’t tell you any of the babies’ middle names.

Something classical and short like:
Beatrice Kate
Beatrice Clare
Beatrice Ann
Beatrice Jane
Beatrice Lee

I don't think you need to have a short middle name. There's no need to dumb the name down that way.

Beatrice Eloise
Beatrice Elspeth
Beatrice Rosina
Beatrice Alexandra
Beatrice Kathryn
Beatrice Tamsin
Beatrice Isobel
Beatrice Annabel
Beatrice Arabella
Beatrice Madeleine
Beatrice Mirabel

Not sure how a single syllable middle name is "dumbing down" thought it was more about a name that flows, rather than a name with many syllables that doesn't flow or sound nice together.

mathanxiety · 26/05/2022 05:34

Maybe dumbing down isn't the right phrase. I'm thinking pairing a longer first name with a short middle name is almost a way of apologising for the long first name (and surname).

A combination of long names can flow just as well as long-short combinations can. The 'flow' in names has to do with the mellifluous quality of the sounds, not the length of the names.

Beatrice Emily
Beatrice Mabel
Beatrice Edith
Beatrice Eliza
Beatrice Annabelle
Beatrice Helen
Beatrice Mary
Beatrice Catherine
Beatrice Florence
Beatrice Violet

@sunflowerdaisyrose , it's very popular. Most girl's born in the past 20 years in my circle have had the middle name Rose, May or Grace, so they have become really boring.

My friends mostly either have the middle name Anne or Jane, and my DC's friends all seem to have Louise or Jane as the middle name. Nothing against the names, they are all nice but they're uninspired.
