I posted about the name Juliet yesterday and it seems that there could be some confusion over pronunciation. So, how would you pronounce the name?

JULIE-et?
Julie-ET?

Julie et

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 27/05/2022 12:26

My cousin is called Juliet and having read this thread I'm now doubting how I've ever said her name Confused. She is Jules most of the time! My gran calls her Julie. I've also got a cousin Julie Grin

I think the difference is like:
Harriet/Juliet
Serviette/Juliette

(I know Serviette isn't a name btw!)

pinklavenders · 27/05/2022 15:40

Yes Serviette, Odette, Juliette etc

Very different to Juliet

ATadConfused · 27/05/2022 15:44

@Silverbirchy if you want it pronounced a certain way, choose a different name, otherwise it's going to drive you barmy.

Snowiscold · 27/05/2022 16:59

KarrotKake · 27/05/2022 09:02

@Snowiscold how do you work out what is emphasized? The only version of juliet in your message that sounds different to me is Jool-yet. The other 2 are indistinguishable to my ears.

I don’t have to work it out. It’s how they are pronounced. Is that what you mean?
JULiet is pronounced with the emphasis on the Jool bit. The “iet” is swallowed - it almost makes it two syllables -JOOL-yet or JOOL-iet -very subtle three syllables.
JuliETTE is three syllables, with the emphasis on the ETTE. Jool-ee-ETTE.

Concestor · 27/05/2022 17:50

JEW-liET

Peccary · 31/05/2022 22:39

DD is Juliet and I put equal stress on the syllables, "Ju-li-et" unless telling her off when the "et" is more pronounced. I'll have to listen more to how others say it!

Fifthtimelucky · 01/06/2022 08:37

By coincidence I watched the film ´Letters to Juliet' a couple of days ago.

Vanessa Redgrave pronounces it like Julia but with a T on the end.

That's good enough for me!

CambsAlways · 26/02/2023 09:40

julieeeeee -et

DuchessOfSausage · 26/02/2023 10:51

That's how I say it too. I don't say Harriet as Harry-et, Violet as Viol-et, Scarlett as Scarl-et, or Julia a Julie-ah

goldenfoliage · 26/02/2023 19:02

I pronounce it with equal stress. If I want to stress it, I say syllable in Juliet lauder since it's not natural for me to stress any syllable in Juliet.

Hobbesmanc · 27/02/2023 08:54

Hmmm flatter as in Juliet Bravo. Or extended as in Juliette Binoche. Deffo different sounds.

Theoldwoman · 27/02/2023 08:57

They are both the same OP.

Dew- liet is how I pronounce it.

Some say:

Jewel-iet

DuchessOfSausage · 27/02/2023 13:41

@Theoldwoman , I'd say your versions as Doo-liet and Joo-el-iet

Theoldwoman · 27/02/2023 13:55

That makes absolutely no sense.

Pemba · 27/02/2023 15:27

Dew-liet?? There's no 'd' in there.

DuchessOfSausage · 27/02/2023 16:12

@Theoldwoman , yours make no sense to me.
Dew has no J in it, and Jewel is two syllables:
[djuː]
[ˈdʒuːəl]
Juliet is [ˈdʒuːlɪɛt]

Reddahlias · 27/02/2023 19:18

Juliet is JULIE-et

Juliette is Julie-ET

The latter has the emphasis on the ETTE

DuchessOfSausage · 27/02/2023 19:23

Yes. Just as @Reddahlias says it.

Piggywaspushed · 27/02/2023 19:45

I think this thread has taught me I don't pronounce Julia the same way as you English people, let alone Juliet.

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/02/2023 20:37

jew-lee-et

Which as far as I’ve experienced is how it’s always said in the Uk even if you spell it Juliette,.

daisypond · 27/02/2023 20:58

Juliet and Juliette are different.
Juliette is three syllables with emphasis on ETTE.
Juliet is almost- not quite- two syllables with emphasis on JU. More like Jul-yet.

Reddahlias · 27/02/2023 21:06

Juliet and Juliette are different

Just like

Isabel and Isabelle
Annabel and Annabelle

The former are the English spellings with the emphasis on the first syllable. The latter are French and emphasise the last syllable

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 28/02/2023 00:15

Ive only ever heard it pronounced Juliet - as in Romeo and Juliet. No matter how many different ways people are trying to write it, I can't hear it any other way 🤷🏼‍♀️

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 28/02/2023 00:19

Now I'm even more confused!

To me Juliet and Juliette are pronounced exactly the same!

To me
Isabel and Isabelle are pronounced the same
Annabel and Annabelle are pronounced the same
