Levi to rhyme with Gravy?

I met someone who introduced themselves as Levi but pronounced as above. Has anyone come across this pronounciation. It’s not something I’ve come across before and I’m Jewish so it’s not an uncommon name to me. Just never come across it pronounced like this?

If it rhymed with gravy it wasn't Levi.

I never have. Was this person's name spelled Levi or Lavi?

Purplecatshopaholic · 24/05/2022 18:44

So saying Lay-vee, as opposed to Lee-vy, and they defo spelled it Levi? Never heard of that before!

DuchessOfSausage · 24/05/2022 18:44

Levy

I'm not sure what you mean by rhyming with gravy, but I'm familiar with Levi pronounced LEH-vee, though I'd read it as Lee-vye initially. The LEH-vee pronunciation is in Hamilton too.

Levee like a dyke or dam, Levy like a fine or tax?
Yes I have, can't remember where or when didn't question the spelling.

Tryagain2020 · 24/05/2022 18:48

Levy like a tax? No, I've never come across this, it sounds wrong to me.

DuchessOfSausage · 24/05/2022 18:51

it's a surname. Usually pronounced like levy (levvy) but an accent on the e would make it nearer Lay-vee

cafedesreves · 24/05/2022 18:52

In Italian it would be sort of like that, in between that and Leh-vi.
As in Primo Levi

Snowiscold · 24/05/2022 18:59

Yes, Lev-ee is the traditional Hebrew pronunciation, I believe. Lee-vye is the anglicised pronunciation. It’s similar with Eli, too.

Crisscrossquiz · 24/05/2022 19:03

It’s spelled Levi. It’s their first name but he pronounced it Layvi (short i). I’ve heard it said as leevye as in the jeans and also levi as in a tax but never layvi . It’s the first time I’ve heard it pronounced this way.

My grandfather alway pronounced it to rhyme with Navy. It was his name (and his father’s and grandfathers and a few more generations back).

DogInATent · 24/05/2022 19:16

Levi drove his Chevvy to the levee?

Crisscrossquiz · 24/05/2022 19:24

DogInATent. No it’s like TonyBennsCat says her Grandfather said it. To rhyme with Navy. Tony it’s interesting that is how it has been pronounced in your family. It just sounded so unusual to me to hear someone say it this way.
