Is Dahlia a nice name?

Hi all,

I found out I'm having a little girl today and we already named her before we knew and we've settled on Dahlia (Dah-Lia like the black Dahlia) Patricia Smith (not real last name but just as common).

But my DH is saying he like Dahlia-Rose but I think Dahlia is quite strong on its own but I'm not sure. I'm just questioning whether I actually think it's a nice name because originally I thought it was quite uncommon but not too unusual ..

What do you ladies (and men) think?

Just think how many times your daughter will have to correct the spelling or failed pronunciation. Be kind and choose a different name.

That's already happened with my sons name and his isn't unusual so

I like Dahlia. Don’t think it goes with Patricia though

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 24/05/2022 17:35

I’m not sure. It’s a really pretty name, and dahlias are super popular as flowers these days; but I guess the Black Dahlia and Bertie Wooster’s Aunt Dahlia aren’t great associations.

Then again, the importance of supposedly negative associations with baby names is often overstated on here, I think. Most people come to “own” their names so that kind of thing isn’t important.

DancingUnderTheLights · 24/05/2022 17:38

It's a nice name. I imagine if her first name was Dahlia-Rose most people would just call her Dahlia. Plus I'm not keen on sticking two names together to be one first name.

DancingUnderTheLights · 24/05/2022 17:39

It's weird how you mention Black Dahlia as that's not a good thing I'd want connected.

Johnnysgirl · 24/05/2022 17:39

No.

That's what I was thinking because my mind goes to the black Dahlia first before the flowers but there's plenty of Jacks around so l think like you say people make their names their own so I'm thinking it might be okay.

I was just explaining how to pronounce it as I know people pronounce the flowers differently.

fruitbrewhaha · 24/05/2022 17:41

It's pronounced DAY - LEE - UH

But it can be pronounced Dah-Lia which is what we were thinking of

I think your pronounciation is the American version, Dahlia is pronounced differently here in the Uk. Day lee a , rather than Dah lia

DuchessOfSausage · 24/05/2022 17:48

Dahlia is fine but she will be called Dayl-ya a lot.

Dahlia-Rose seems a bit ridiculous. Two different flowers, and the girls with hyphenated names are either Lily-Rose or Ella-May or similar

fruitbrewhaha · 24/05/2022 17:50

Are you in the UK? British people will assume Day Lee Uh. In the US Dah lee uh.

If you don't mind then call her what ever name you love. If you like flower names there are lots that wouldn't cause difficulty. I've always rather liked Marigold. Or Primrose.

Yes, this.
Nobody will pronounce it "your" way, op.

I didn't realise it was American, I guess she could correct them or if she prefer dayleeuh then that's fine too - nothings set in stone really.

My sons called Louis and he's always called Lewis.

Louise0701 · 24/05/2022 17:54

It’s awful.

Soubriquet · 24/05/2022 17:56

I automatically said Dah-lia not day-lia.

Well, you're pronouncing that one incorrectly too. How odd!

EncantoDaisies · 24/05/2022 17:59

How am I pronouncing Louis incorrectly?

OP posts:
DuchessOfSausage · 24/05/2022 18:00

Also, hyphenated names get long and will be said quickly and it's not easy to catch what the name is. She'll probably get asked to repeat it a few times a lot

GeorgiaGirl52 · 24/05/2022 18:01

Love the name, but in the south US we pronounce it "Doll-ya" as in Roald Dahl.
Don't care for "Patricia" though. How about "Patrice"?

saraclara · 24/05/2022 18:02

Sorry. I'd think Day-Lia.

it's pronounced Loo-ee.

Luis is pronounced Loo-is

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 24/05/2022 18:04

I would pronounce it your way. I quite like Dahlia. Don’t like Dahlia-Rose.
