Two middle names?

OK, just wanted to garner some opinions on this-
I was considering giving my daughter two middle names as I think it sounds better than with just the one. What do people think about those with two middle names? Is it a bit much?

My DS1 has 2 middle names.

WarOnSlugs · 24/05/2022 06:07

No, it's totally fine OP. Go for it!

KangarooKenny · 24/05/2022 06:10

Mine have two.

FloraGreysteel · 24/05/2022 06:16

It's quite normal for Catholics isn't it?

Trinacham · 24/05/2022 06:25

Fine if you want to. My LB has 2 middle names

mizzo · 24/05/2022 06:33

I have two middle names.
Occasionally it's caused problems on forms running out of space, mostly when I had my maiden name which was quite long. Some banks only put one middle initial on cards.
I really regret not giving my DC two middle names. My friends newborn has three middle names!

ofwarren · 24/05/2022 06:34

It's fine, totally normal

Remainiac · 24/05/2022 06:41

My friend’s DC have four names each plus double barrelled surname 😏🤷‍♀️Which is a bit much really IMO. Still, it gives them lots of choices later in life to pick the one they like best.
I have another friend whose kids have only first name and surname, which seems a bit boring but she thinks nobody ever uses a middle name so what’s the point.

RoyKent · 24/05/2022 06:41

DD has two. Loved them both equally and couldn't pick!

Anotherusernamethisweek · 24/05/2022 06:59

3 of my DC have 2 middle names and the other 2 have 1 middle name. Myself and my siblings, cousins, parents and aunts/uncles have no middle names. There are no rules.

KirstenBlest · 24/05/2022 08:44

I don't have a middle name and neither do DC.
2 is ok but they are hardly ever used and most people I know either hate or love their middle names.

Don't use a filler middle name or all your favourite names.

I have a friend with 3 middle names but only uses the first. Something like Amelia Jane Louise McWilliam Smith going by AJS

jammyrose · 24/05/2022 08:56

It’s normal, my husband has 2.

babyjellyfish · 24/05/2022 13:51

Perfectly normal, my son has two middle names, one from each side of the family.

balalake · 24/05/2022 17:40

Perfectly Ok, especially if they are to remember a deceased loved one.

nc888 · 24/05/2022 20:14

Very normal! Mine have 2.

My DP has two middle names (and double barrelled surname). So 5 names in total! On official letters one or both middle names is usually always just the initial as his name is too long - so he never sees his name fully written out on anything.

In contrast, I only have 2 names - my first name and surname. Have never felt I missed out on anything not having a middle name. Definitely do not wish I had 5 names like DP.

user3199 · 25/05/2022 00:08

Perfectly Ok, especially if they are to remember a deceased loved one.

i know a lot of people do this but I find it strange. If you want to remember a dead relative why not add their name to your own name? Why give it to a child who has never met that relative - it won't make them remember them. And I can't see how thinking of my child's middle name would help me remember a dead relative more than I would otherwise.

Alstoybarn · 25/05/2022 00:15

I love love love the idea of 2 middle names! However I'm pregnant with my 6rh baby and have only ever used one so I kinda feel obliged to stick to that so they 'match ' which in itself probably sounds silly. Kinda wish I'd done it with them all!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/05/2022 00:36

Loads of people have two middle names (including myself and lots of my family) - it's pretty common, often to honour a relative from each side of the family or each parent chooses one. Only issue is overall length as some forms have limited space so if the names or surname are especially long, your DC might end up just writing their middle initials.

takingmytimeonmyride · 25/05/2022 00:40

I have two middle names, after both of my grandmothers.

My oldest son has two middle names, after 2 members of my family. I gave him 2 in case I didn't have any more sons to honour both the people I wanted to. I had 4 more sons! They all have one middle name.

ScAmberTurd · 25/05/2022 02:51

My children and I have two middle names. They also have a double-barrelled surname. Day-to-day they are just called by their first names, so it's really no big deal having the other names. I'd have added more if I could 😀

Ditherydoo · 25/05/2022 08:17

Thanks everyone, it's really interesting to get different views on this- I think I will just go for it!

My DD has four, DS has three. Go for it.

onelittlefrog · 25/05/2022 08:21

It's very common although to be honest I always just think the parents couldn't make up their mind and it must be annoying for the child to have such a long name!
