Family name that I really love. Thoughts? For a girl.

I know an elderly lady called Oriel. I always think it sounds anatomical to me.

Definitely not keen.

WinterDeWinter · 26/05/2022 00:14

I love it. but ds was nearly Eden or Ariel so I have form.

Supersimkin2 · 26/05/2022 00:26

Auriol is usual sp for girl. Fiddly.

Ariel is gender fluid sprite off that Shakespeare, as well as soap.

Oriel, no idea except the college.

Koala3d · 26/05/2022 00:38

After a window?

spiderlight · 26/05/2022 12:41

It's Welsh for 'gallery', but if you're not in Wales that won't matter.

IrisVersicolor · 26/05/2022 17:16

I love it I knew someone called it at school, it was a real stand out name.

However she would now just get called Oral. The French spelling of Aurielle might get around that.

In fact the meaning of ‘gallery’ comes from Latin originally probably via French.

IrisVersicolor · 26/05/2022 17:19

Or Aurelia and call her Auriel at home.

stacestation · 01/06/2022 03:17

Yes, associations would be windows and Oxford college.

babyjellyfish · 01/06/2022 08:23

I don't think it works, sorry.

How about Opal?

bigbootyjulie · 01/06/2022 12:52

At first glance I thought it was masculine - maybe because of its similarity to male Hebrew names. I'm also not sure about the pronunciation.

Interesting in theory, but not a name I would choose.

pitterypattery00 · 02/06/2022 20:35

Not a name I'm familiar with, and I assumed it was a boys name before reading thread.

Personally I'm not keen for a first name but quite cool as a middle name.

Yika · 02/06/2022 22:12

I quite like it but assumed it was a boy’s name…

Toddlerteaplease · 02/06/2022 22:13

Oriel and Merton, Is my first thought. They were two tower blocks in Leicester.

SweetMystery · 02/06/2022 22:16

I also went to school with a girl called Oriel. She was lovely.

Cherryblossoms85 · 02/06/2022 22:19

Nope. Terrible Oxford college. Full of tossers.

Basilbrushgotfat · 02/06/2022 22:19

I love it!!

YouWhatLove · 02/06/2022 22:21

I have a friend called Aurelia who was called Areola at school. Probably not so much of an issue now that it’s a more common name but possibly something to consider

HeyDelRey · 04/06/2022 14:21

Know a close friend's daughter called this - it's really cool (as is she!). She's never been called oral, and TBH, kids will find anything to tease people about if they are so inclined. If you like it, go for it, especially if it has family meaning - at least she won;t be one of five Olivias in the year.

SemperIdem · 05/06/2022 01:13

I went to school with a girl called Oriel.

Absolutely nobody called her Oral, it was never even mentioned. Not just because the girl in question would have throat punched you for doing so without hesitation!

I think it’s a really lovely name.
