We've narrowed it down to 2 names for our baby boy coming soon- Jesse or Elias (pronounced E-LIE-ASS). We like both meanings. I'd just like to know which you prefer mumsnet! Thanks 😊

Slightly prefer Elias.

I Think it’s weird if people say Jessie and Jesse sound the same - it’s like saying bough (of a tree) and bow (of a ship) sound the same.

But neither bow nor bough are insults...

A big Jesse/Jessie is, especially if he's male.

Although I've heard the phrase 'big jesse' I've never actually heard it used as an insult...

The phrase is “big jessie” - not Jesse. “Big Jesse” as an insult makes no sense at all. Jesse is a very masculine, powerful name - “the root of Jesse” - Jesse, who founded the house of King David, and has echoed down the generations and culture for ever.

I Think it’s weird if people say Jessie and Jesse sound the same - it’s like saying bough (of a tree) and bow (of a ship) sound the same. So what if they do? They’re different things, different names.

It doesn't matter that they aren't spelled the same. The surname Cox sounds like Cocks so kids will bully because of this.

And the fact that several of us are saying the same means it could potentially be a thing.
Bow and bough are not comparable.
Insults don't need to 'make sense'. They still get banded about.

My favourite boys name is Jesse but I couldn't use it, I was gutted.

Ambii · 23/05/2022 19:02

@chasingthewind11 I have a Jesse who's 8 now. EVERYONE assumes he's a girl 😰It gets tiring, I can say "I need to make an appointment for my son" sure what's his name? "Jesse" and her date of birth. Every time without fail, I've not heard the taunt 'a big Jesse' except for adults I don't think it's relevant for children these days tbh. He hates being called Jess and always says that he wishes he was called David - his middle name 🙄 Hope you fine the perfect name for you DS and all goes well! I still love his name but I feel generally people associate it with a girl

chasingthewind11 · 23/05/2022 19:17

@Ambii Thanks for your reply, that's really helpful to know. I'm sorry he's constantly referred to as a girl that must be really tiring. Funny we are also considering Jesse David ☺️

@Snowiscold Ahh I didn't know the insult was 'Jessie' I'd be hopeful kids these days wouldn't have heard that phrase

Would love to hear from any other parents of Jesse's if they've had any problems

Elias is gorgeous

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/05/2022 23:05

Jesse

i like Elias, but too many El and E names about.

Jesse has a long tradition as a v masculine tradition so wouldn't worry about that.

Theoldwoman · 24/05/2022 00:35

Elias 100%
