i have a girl due in august and me and me and my husband can’t agree on a name, even though it’s very common right now I love the name Olivia I just think it’s a and can suit any age timeless classic. My husband likes the name Emily and I’m not into it. I’m from the US I moved here 3 years ago and the name Emily in The US is classed as a bit of a 90s/2000s name because it rose up the charts so fast and was number 1 from 1996-2007, I think it was at it got mega popular around the same time in this country aswell but I it’s starting to date badly in the US because I’ve noticed normally the once “number 1” names always tend to date a lot worse. obviously lI know that the naming trends may be a little different over here. I’m living in UK now so it obviously isn’t a big issue but I’m just curious as to what peoples thoughts of on the name Emily in UK?? Is it dated now? As I said my husband does really like Emily but Olivia just has more of a mature sound to me, Emily always sounds abit juvenile. Thoughts?

They are both lovely, if popular, names. I agree that Olivia is just a little better for a grown up, but both names are very classic and acceptable and well liked and won't raise any eyebrows.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 22/05/2022 17:31

I love both names but more nicknames for Olivia which could be a good or bad thing!

DuchesOfSausage · 22/05/2022 17:31

It's not dated but is very popular and has been very popular for about 20 years. See [[https://names.darkgreener.com/#olivia[]

She'll probably be Olivia Surname everywhere apart from home.

CheshireCats · 22/05/2022 17:33

Both names are classic and lovely.

DuchesOfSausage · 22/05/2022 17:37

Sorry, link fail. Try names.darkgreener.com/#olivia and names.darkgreener.com/#emily.

MagicTurtle · 22/05/2022 17:48

Both lovely names, neither of them are dated IMO.

CambsAlways · 22/05/2022 17:50

Never liked the name Emily but think Olivia is lovely

hattie43 · 22/05/2022 17:53

Both names are lovely

20viona · 22/05/2022 17:59

Both as dull as dishwater.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/05/2022 18:02

There are SO MANY Olivias!! I don't even think it's that nice a name... As for Emily, what about Emma instead? Maybe something like Claudia or Marianne if you want the feminine but not childish angle?

SummaLuvin · 22/05/2022 19:24

In the England and Wales Olivia has been either 1 or 2 place for girls names since 2008, top 10 since 1999, and popular for a long time before then too. So it is very saturated.

Emily to me is much more late 80's/early 90's than 2000's.

JosieK8 · 22/05/2022 20:11

I agree with you that Emily is a bit past it now. I left primary school in 2005 and half the class was called Emily

Penguinsaregreat · 22/05/2022 20:13

I think they are both very similar, timeless and classic.

Luluuuuuuuuuu85 · 22/05/2022 20:29

Emily isn't perhaps quite as popular as it was but I still know lots and I don't think it's dated at all!

You say this but I am a teacher in a school of 1200 and we only have 2 Olivia's

toastedcat · 23/05/2022 00:10

I find them both quite similarly inoffensive.

DramaAlpaca · 23/05/2022 00:14

I much prefer Olivia. Emily is a bit dull. Both are popular in the UK.

Snowiscold · 23/05/2022 00:38

I prefer Olivia. Emily is a bit dreary. I don’t know any Olivias at all and only one one Emily -aged five.

Anystarinthesky · 23/05/2022 00:58

I like both names.

elfran · 23/05/2022 10:01

This thread seems familiar... OP is this yours too?

www.mumsnet.com/talk/baby_names/4426310-I-feel-asif-the-name-emily-is-too-dated-to-the-2000s-now-Opinions

If it's not, apologies. Emily seems much more classic than Olivia to my ears. Both are very popular but Olivia has been so popular for so long that it feels very time-stamped to me.

Scabbyknackers · 23/05/2022 10:03

They're both pretty timeless and classic although very heavily used recently. I'd say Olivia more so. Still lovely though and not dated as such, just a lot of them about.

Andromachehadabadday · 23/05/2022 10:11

I would go with Emily over Olivia.

might just be my area. But between my dds friends/class mates and my nieces friends class mates and their hobbies. I know 14 Olivia’s.

My niece has 3 in her nursery class (so aged around 3-4).

My dd is 18 so the people we know span a lot of years.

I also think the logic you have applied to Emily, imo, can easily be applied to Olivia. So you are kind of talking yourself out of both.

cottagegardenflower · 23/05/2022 10:18

Both lovely but overused in this country now

GlitteryGreen · 23/05/2022 10:20

Penguinsaregreat · 22/05/2022 20:13

I think they are both very similar, timeless and classic.

Agree with this.

I'd say at the moment there will be a lot more Olivias than Emilys but I'd put them both in the same bracket.

GrimDamnFanjo · 23/05/2022 10:21

Livia?
Olive?
