Surname given at birth

Sooo have a really wierd question - what name will my scans and baby maternity notes have also what surname will my baby be given once born

I was married in 2014 so my name changed from my maiden name to my married, I have a son born 2015 , but soon after followed with my divorce 2017

i still hold my married surname on my nhs medical and bank and all files except my driving license and passport are back in my maiden name purely to keep the same surname as my son.

Since then I have my new partner 2020 obviously his name is different, we have spoke of being married but it's just not happened yet, we have found out we are expecting a baby, and for obvious reasons I'm thinking the worst as our baby together will be given my ex husbands name 🤦‍♀️ as my records at hospital are under that,

Is it true would that happen?? Or is there an option have have the baby surname on scans and once it's born my partners surname even though we ain't married.

What a palava - it's starting to worry him though an he really isn't liking it Either

You give your baby their name when they are born and all your scans and maternity notes have your name on. At the top of the scan it says your name and date of birth. Your notes have your name on as well.

GiltEdges · 20/05/2022 20:51

Your scans, maternity notes etc will be in your name, not baby's name and the name will be whatever your current NHS record states.

The baby will have no name officially until you register its birth.

A couple of options

a) check with hospital regarding their policy, ie is the baby automatically given the mother's surname or can you request another
b) nip down to the registry office pronto and get married and change you name
c) change your name by deed poll - takes about 4-8 weeks

so it depends on when the baby is due.

I know when you're registering the baby's birth you can give the baby any name you wish, even the father's if your not married. But if you're not married the father can't be named as the father unless he is present at the registration and he agrees to be named

If you have officially changed your name back to your maiden name, you should have changed everything to that. Especially your bank! Baby will be 'baby (your surname)' in hospital. However you can give them whatever surname you want when you register them.

JenniferWooley · 20/05/2022 20:57

the medical identity bracelet attached to baby at birth will have the mothers surname which in your case will be your married name if that's the name you go by for your medical records.

Lavenderlast · 20/05/2022 21:02

You name the baby when you register it. If you want to name it Sunshine McRaindrop then her surname on her birth certificate will be Raindrop.

Decide what surname you want to give the baby. It really is that simple.

savoycabbage · 20/05/2022 21:09

You should change everything into your maiden now if you don't want your married name associated with the hospital notes and scans. If you are still using your married surname then the hospital will use it too.

However that leaves your son on the outside of things. I wouldn't change my name to something different from your child and leave him the only one with a different surname.

I would double barrel your name and have

Ds John Smith
You Jane Smith-MaidenName
Baby Bob MaidenName

That way they both share a name with you.

IwillrunIwillfly · 20/05/2022 21:11

The midwives will refer to your baby ( the name on the identity bracelet etc) will be the same as your surname as it is on your nhs records as that's how the midwives will know you. So if your nhs notes have your name as Sarah Smith, the baby will initially be baby Smith even if ultimately you plan to register the surname as Jones. It won't make any difference in the long run as when you register their name that will be that, but for security/safety reasons the baby has to have the same surname as the mother while in hospital.

On scans and your hospital notes, it will have your name.

Summerwetordry · 20/05/2022 21:17

My baby had my ex-husband's surname on her wristband even though she wasn't his. It seemed weird, but my notes were still in my married name.

SpringBadger · 20/05/2022 21:19

As PP have said, your baby has no name until you register the birth.

Your pregnancy notes and scans will only have your name - you are the patient at that point.

When baby is born, they will be referred to in hospital as (e.g.) "Male infant of Sarah Smith" or "Baby Smith". Crucially, they will also be given an NHS number and Red Book. The Red Book will initially say "Baby Smith" and the NHS number. You can then register baby as "Englebert Humperdinck" (literally any surname you want in the world, regardless of who does or doesn't share it) and write that in the Red Book instead (if you like). You will use the birth certificate to register baby elsewhere, e.g. at the doctor's.

YellowDots · 20/05/2022 21:24

My dd2's red book has 'girl' in the name box as the doctor asked what she was called and I was halfway through saying'I haven't decided' and he launched into writing girl.

Runkle · 20/05/2022 21:30

Baby's hospital ankle tags will say 'Baby/Baby name if already decided <Your Official Surname>. At the hospital I didn't know so said oh Baby will have my partner's surname (we're not married) and they said the tag needs to match my surname for security reasons. When you register them their surname becomes official. NHS scan will have your official surname on. If y9u go for a private scan most places can out 'Baby of XX and XY' Or 'Baby Jones'.

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 20/05/2022 21:53

Register yourself with your birth name, change son's name (if possible) to your birth name, give new baby your birth name. Don't change your name if you get married as you know what a palaver it can cause,

Crunchymum · 22/05/2022 13:43

I don't think the OP is asking about surname registration. She is asking about immediately after baby is born (before registration) and yes baby will be given whatever surname you currently use. So if your records use your married name, that is name baby will have.

All my children were "baby Crunchy" and their red books have this name. They all were registered with dads surname.

It's no big deal, in my situation, but I can totally understand why you'd not want your new baby to have to ex husbands name.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 22/05/2022 13:49

At hospital they will default to the surname on your notes. Both my children had my surname on their identity bracelets. It makes it easier for them to keep track of mothers and babies.
