Are we ready for 60s names yet?

Due a daughter in a few months and we'd both like to honour our late mothers. Their names were Susan and Deborah.

Are these just too dated?
Susan Deborah or Deborah Susan
We keep flipping from yes we are definitely going for it to noo!

Thoughts please!

I'd go with Susan Deborah. I like Susan and Susie, but not Sue.
Dd15 has a Susan in her year.

Cloud16 · 20/05/2022 00:04

I think Susan would be refreshing. Don't think the world is ready for Deborah to come back yet lol

NessieMcNessface · 20/05/2022 00:14

I prefer Susan Deborah as well. Names
I remember from my schooldays are Gillian, Jillian, Annette, Christine, Barbara, Jaqueline, Pauline, Judith, Margaret, Pamela, Linda, Mary and Sandra to mention just a few. In fact at my secondary school we had four Gillians in my form group; it was such a popular name. Not many of these names being used today though; who knows if they will ever come back into fashion. It seems unlikely but you can never tell.

ChazzaGirl · 20/05/2022 00:14

I think Deborah is nicer as a first name - I always think of Deborah Harry when I hear the name, and I think it’s quite timeless. Susan is a bit of an ‘aunty’ name to me.

I think there are certainly some 60s names that are due a comeback - I rather like Sandra.

celestebellman · 20/05/2022 00:28

I really like Deborah, and think it is definitely due a comeback - it's biblical, so should to some extent be enduring, even though biblical names also go through phases (eg Mark and John currently out, Elijah and Ezra in!) Also has a nice meaning (bee, I think).

Really dislike name Susan, it is extremely dull and unglamorous. Susannah is nice though.

I think some 60s names could come back - Valerie, Pamela, Gillian, Amanda are all quite nice.

Go for it, I think you'll be ahead of the curve. Not long ago it would have seemed ridiculous to call a child Arthur or Stanley. Now the world is awash!

AuntTwacky · 20/05/2022 00:37

Julie!

Aquamarine1029 · 20/05/2022 00:39

I'd give them both a hard pass, sorry.

MrsEricBana · 20/05/2022 00:39

I think it's ok too!

MrsEricBana · 20/05/2022 00:41

I'm of that era and pretty much all my friends are called Jo, Sally or Alison now

MummyInTheNecropolis · 20/05/2022 00:41

Susan is the best of the two. I think Angela deserves a resurgence.

Dnadoon · 20/05/2022 04:08

Debby-Sue

MadameFantabulosa · 20/05/2022 04:20

Valerie, Sandra, Linda, Barbara, Carol, Pauline are more 50s than 60s. My school friends were Susan, Sarah, Nicola, Joanne, Catherine, Debbie, Alison, Caroline, Karen, Tracey and Fiona.

Loopynanna · 20/05/2022 04:51

I like Debra

Fizzyfish · 20/05/2022 05:00

Susan Deborah- Susie is so cute!

Foosfa · 20/05/2022 09:37

Thank you so much everyone! Maybe we should just go for it. There will of course be some very surprised reactions to her name, but I quite like that!
I prefer Deborah Susan but dh prefers it the other way around

Susanna is lovely

AnotherMum22 · 20/05/2022 09:59

A variation of Susan might be nice but those two names by themselves are v dull in my opinion, couldn’t imagine calling that in the playground in 2022.

Badqueen · 20/05/2022 10:02

Id go susannah. Its close enough to be a tribute but it feels more modern to me.

I love Annette it’s so pretty 🥰

OP - I think Susan is lovely, Susie as a nn is adorable!

Yes this!

saraclara · 20/05/2022 10:07

Honestly? Why not have them both as middle names?
Your daughter is her own person. She deserves a name of her own.

My first and middle names are for my GGM, my GM and my mum. I've always wished that I'd had my own name. It might not seem a huge thing, but I'm in my 60s now and it still rankles that I want recognised as a person in my own right. I was determined that my own children would have a name that was their own.

saraclara · 20/05/2022 10:08

Want= wasn't

ElenaSt · 20/05/2022 10:15

I love Susan and the pet name of Suzie/Susie.

RuthW · 20/05/2022 11:08

Don't like Susan but love Suzannah shortened to Suzie.

Deborah is ok and better than Susan.
