Hi everyone, just after some advice. My husband and I (well, mostly me) love the name Walter, but we are unsure whether we should keep it on our list due to our surname and its link to pop culture. Our surname begins with White, think Whiting. I haven't watched Breaking Bad, but due to the Walter White connection do you think it's doable? We aren't in the US if that makes any difference. Would love your thoughts on the name 🙂

I like it but I probably wouldn’t for the Walter White connection. I think the jokes would get on my nerves.

Greatoutdoors · 17/05/2022 07:52

What about Wilfred or Wilbur?

AllyCatTown · 17/05/2022 07:54

I think it’s fine. It’s slightly different and I imagine for his generation it will be less relevant. It’s about ten years since it ended.

I love the name Walter

Electrox · 17/05/2022 08:00

It's fine, go for it!

toastofthetown · 17/05/2022 09:46

I wouldn’t use Walter Whitehurst or whatever your surname is. It it was just Walter Wilson then that’s fine, but the whole Walter White- is a bit on the nose for me. Breaking Bad as a TV series is a very iconic one, and I wouldn’t be surprised if people are still watching it in twenty years time, like the Sopranos. Not the US is most of the world, and you will know how much of a cultural even Breaking Bad is where you are.

Qwill · 17/05/2022 09:51

It’s a bit of a tongue twister!

SpaceJamtart · 17/05/2022 10:21

I've never seen breaking bad but saw the thread title and thought of Walter White.
It would be fine as a middle name but hes not exactly a model character to share a name with

Mish85 · 18/05/2022 00:31

Thanks for the feedback, a little mixed as expected. I think I might leave it off the list for now and think of alternatives,.just to limit any chance of teasing.

Really dislike Walter

Aquamarine1029 · 18/05/2022 01:09

First of all, you really need to watch Breaking Bad. FGS.

Secondly, if you like the name, go for it.

Starbeach · 18/05/2022 09:24

I absolutely the name Walter but I'm not sure it's back in yet so you could just be ahead of the game

pitterypattery00 · 18/05/2022 10:38

Never watched Breaking Bad or heard of Walter White, so no association there for me. But I find Walter Whiting a bit of a tongue twister as PP said. But it might be ok with your actual surname. Or maybe use it as a middle name?

Walter W is handsome and manly.

Of a similar ilk are:
Ernest
Cedric
Cecil
Barry

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 18/05/2022 12:54

Firstly Walter is a great name. Secondly my great uncle was Walter Williamson and if anything the alliteration enhances its strength.

KatherineJaneway · 18/05/2022 12:59

I wouldn't go for it as when I was a kid, anyone called Walter had the nickname Wally. Never seen Breaking Bad.

AppleJack263 · 18/05/2022 13:39

Personally i woudn't due to the connection, maybe you should go for a name that sounds similar or has a similar vibe

examples:

Wilbur
Wilfred
Wilson
Warren
Herbert
Oswald
Cecil

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 18/05/2022 22:33

Love alliterative names, plus particularly if the surname is not actually White then I don't see how the TV character is problem - it not like it's a soundalike name to a real life dodgy person.

Having said that I do think "Walter Whiting" (or very similar) might be slightly tongue twisty - I think it's because both are 2 syllables on top of the alliteration.

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/05/2022 23:47

I think Walter Whiting is too much - not really because of BB, just Too Much.

Edgar, Francis, Ernest, Amos, Arnold, Rufus, Victor, Hector, Ivor, Kestor, Silas all have a similar vibe, to me.

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/05/2022 23:48

Kester, I mean..

AWOL66 · 21/05/2022 02:01

Two Walters in my family who I adore and that's a great show. I don't think that character's name is so obvious to sound cliched. People will know the name of the show straight away and know the actors more than the full name of the charactor. Louis Theroux's son's called Walter too!
