LEELA sound. PLEASE can you help?

We love the name Leela, but because I am European I would have written it as Lila, that unfortunately in English / American seems to be mostly pronounced as Lyla (sound that we don’t want to use).

I am not sure if I like the Leela spelling, and I was wondering if I can then write this name as Leahla. However, when I put Leahla in youtube to listen to the pronounciation, it gives me Lyla!!! Why on earth? How would you pronounce the name Leahla?

Also, assuming I can use the spelling Leahla to pronounce the name as Leela, which spelling to you prefer to see written down: LEELA or LEAHLA? Or would you simply use LILA and correct people? Lila James or Lila Iké for example are both pronounced Leela.

If I use the spelling Lilla (I saw it in another post as a suggestion), the sound would be different from Leela, I think? As English is not my first language I don’t hear the difference too much, but my husband (he is English) does and he says it would shorten the ee sound a lot, making the name sound less sweet.
Would you give me some advice? How easier would it be if one vowel = one sound! IoI
THANK YOU! :-)

LEAHLA - would definitely be Lee-ah-la

Spudlover · 15/05/2022 10:04

I have known a couple of people with that pronunciation who spell it Leila.

Lilla would probably be pronounced to rhyme with Willa. Leahla would probably get Leah-la.

I’d go with Leila but I don’t think there is an foolproof spelling other than Leela.

Greatoutdoors · 15/05/2022 10:07

Leela is the best spelling for your pronunciation but Lila works too. Lila would probably get mispronounced when people read it but once she’s introduced herself people soon get used to it.

dementedpixie · 15/05/2022 10:09

Leila probably the most likely to get the Leela pronunciation
Leahla I would say lee-ah-la
Lilla would be lill-ah (like the start of lily)

NoSquirrels · 15/05/2022 10:12

If you want to guarantee it is said as it’s spelled then Leela is the only one that works.

But it’s not a big deal, tbh, if people get it wrong initially. You just correct them then they remember, usually.

Overthebow · 15/05/2022 10:12

Leahla would be Le ah la.
Lilla would be lill a
Lila would be ly la

none of those are Leela

Gladioli23 · 15/05/2022 10:13

Leila should get you Leela in sound - you may get some lay-las but Leela is a pretty normal pronunciation of this name so shouldn't cause issues.

KarrotKake · 15/05/2022 10:13

I think you definitely dont want Leahla. Thats Le-ah-la to me.

I'd go with Leila, second vote Leela.

NoSquirrels · 15/05/2022 10:13

Leila probably the most likely to get the Leela pronunciation

I’d pronounce this Layla. But probably just through u familiarity with the name/sound Leela in the first place.

RJnomore1 · 15/05/2022 10:13

Leighla?

BungleandGeorge · 15/05/2022 10:14

Leila.
unfortunately I think all of those names have different pronunciations. I’ve known 3 Leilas all pronounced lee-la but some people pronounce it lay-la. I still
think it’s your best bet though!

RJnomore1 · 15/05/2022 10:14

Or Liela to rhyme with Shiela?

itsgettingweird · 15/05/2022 10:16

I know a Laila (ly - La).

So I don't see why if you introduce Leela or Leila as such people won't pronounce it properly.

BowerOfBramble · 15/05/2022 10:16

leahla would be pronounced as a three syllable word for me: LEE uh la

Leila as some others have suggested would be said: LAY la

Lilla would rhyme with filler

Lila I would probably say the same as Lilla but if you corrected me I’d remember it was “Leela”

I know a Leela and a Leala and both get pronounced the way you want.

pompomseverywhere · 15/05/2022 10:16

Lila is Leela to me

Piapea · 15/05/2022 10:17

Leila, I think would be Layla in most cases. Lila would be Lyla.
Leela is the only foolproof way to get the pronunciation you want, but people aren't opposed to be being corrected if you would prefer Lila.

Cas112 · 15/05/2022 10:17

Leila

AntsAntsAntsAnts · 15/05/2022 10:19

I know a Leela, she’s lovely. I think if you want the name to be pretty bounced Leela you’re better off choosing Leela to be honest.

DolphinaPD · 15/05/2022 10:25

Leala is nicer than Leahla imo, but I'd choose leela over both of those.

Eleonorex · 15/05/2022 10:25

thank you. I can see some suggestions here I didn't think of:

LEIGHLA
LIELA

Would these be pronounced like LEELA then?

OP posts:
JamMakingWannaBe · 15/05/2022 10:26

Leila definitely.

Why would that be pronounced Layla? Sheila, Keira, Freida all have the ee sound.

NoSquirrels · 15/05/2022 10:26

Eleonorex · 15/05/2022 10:25

LIELA

Would these be pronounced like LEELA then?

No. People will just think you can’t spell.

Eleonorex · 15/05/2022 10:32

Thank you again,
how about the LEALA spelling then, as suggested here by one of you?

Would this be LEELA?

BessAndCress · 15/05/2022 10:33

Surprised people are saying Leila. As far as I know that's just another spelling of Layla, from the

I'd say that's still three syllables, but more easily swallowed into two. "Lee-a-la" becomes "Leela" when you speak quickly.

MN ate the rest of my last post... Hey ho.
