Danny of Rory?

Hi

Baby is due in less than a month. I'm convinced it's a boy (but don't know for sure). The two names on our shortlist are Danny (Daniel on BC) and Rory. Which do you prefer?

Both nice, but preference would be Rory. Disagree about the trendy comments, I know Rory's of all ages.

loulou2021 · 15/05/2022 04:58

Thanks so much to everyone for your responses! Looks fairly evenly split between them. I'm inclined to disagree that Rory is trendy - all of the Rory's I know are 20 or older. . I'm Irish though (living in the UK) so perhaps that's why it doesn't seem trendy to me. Also, I have a 5 year old DS and I have never met another child called Rory. However I accept, based on some people's responses, it must be popular with children in other areas.

What about Ruairi if you're Irish?

loulou2021 · 15/05/2022 05:16

@LadyOfTheCanyon I like it but my husband thinks it will be a pain for the child having to explain how to spell and pronounce his name.

My baby is now 14 months old. There are more than one Rory in the couple of baby groups I am in. I do also know 2 little Daniels though! I prefer Daniel but I am biased 😂

Honaloulou · 15/05/2022 07:13

I’m surprised that PPs say that they know more Rorys than Daniels - there are three Daniels in DD’s nursery group of 15 kids!

I prefer Rory, but they’re both good.

bloominglovelyorange · 15/05/2022 07:37

@Honaloulou @loulou2021 @yourestandingonmyneck

I still think Rory is trendy and I've based that on the official statistics (not just my own experiences). The name Rory is certainly on a huge upswing and booming - compared to Daniel which is falling. For that reason I'd definitely pick Daniel but it's your baby of course! Below is links to the graphs of the official statistics of the usage of the name Rory over the last 25 years 📈 📈📈📈and Daniel over the last 25 years 📉📉📉📉. Always best to check the Dark Greener website if you want to see if a name is trending or not. Names like Rory (Ronnie, Robyn etc) are very trendy at the moment

Daniel- and if you’re irish you’ve got your very own Danny Boy ☘️

Nah seriously- my daniel likes the options to use Dan (not too much yet but i can see him growing into that one) Danny (at sports he seems to go by this) and Daniel too…

veronicagoldberg · 15/05/2022 08:47

Daniel nn Danny.

Rory sounds like a different name said with a speech impediment.

Rainbowbaby13 · 15/05/2022 08:50

I like Daniel but not Danny so my vote is for Rory

Congratulations

foldthecheese · 15/05/2022 09:19

I much prefer Danny

Nosetickle · 15/05/2022 09:24

I love Daniel but not keen on Danny as a nickname. Rory is a nice name.

Electrox · 15/05/2022 09:50

Danny

PumpkinsandKittens · 15/05/2022 09:56

Daniel, don’t like Rory at all and sorry think it’s a bit ugly sounding, my son is 10 and still can’t pronounce his Rs so would defo be wowy to him 😂

SirChenjins · 15/05/2022 10:01

I prefer Daniel nn Dan - the Danny boy reference would put me off. Rory can be a bugger to pronounce if you struggle with your r’s but it’s ok as a name.

Greatoutdoors · 15/05/2022 10:04

I love them both but Danny has the edge for me for the reasons other posters have mentioned.

ClinkeyMonkey · 15/05/2022 10:06

Not sure why people are focusing on the potential pronunciation issues. What if your child is Sam or Sophie, for example, and grows up saying Tham or Thophie? Does everybody think about these things when naming their child?

Anyway, for what it's worth, I prefer Rory, even though my BIL is Rory and a complete pain in the arse!

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 15/05/2022 10:15

Rory. Because I have one 😁 I only know one other Rory. No one I know seems to have a problem pronouncing it.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 15/05/2022 10:16

Rory. I really dislike Danny. That said I think Daniel is lovely.

WeirdManFromRummikub · 15/05/2022 10:18

Rory. Definitely.

Sleepthief · 15/05/2022 10:34

I've got a Danny (DS1) and I would have had a Ruari (DS4) except DH thought that by son number 4 he ought to get a say 🙄 Both great names IMO, but there are fewer little Dannys than Rorys in my experience...

LizzieAnt · 15/05/2022 10:58

@bloominglovelyorange
Those naming trends are interesting, thanks.

Quite different to the trends in Ireland where Daniel is currently at number 8 and Rory at 74 (the same rank it had in 1975, incidentally).

Daniel has been in the Irish top 10 for the last 30 years and has long been very popular here.

I like both Daniel and Rory, OP, so not much help to you. For some reason I'm not a huge fan of Danny, though I do like Dan. I also like Dónal, which is generally used to translate Daniel into Irish.

Because we'd struggle with the name, and the likelihood of DS mastering his Rs would be fairly slim.

A friend has a slight lisp and both her DC have names with S in them

Because Wowy does not sound very nice.
