It's quite nice but I think one of little mix named their child it so might get more popular.

glesgakiss · 09/05/2022 20:08

Ahh just googled this and your correct and very recently too 🙄.

Not a fan.

SoManyQuestionsHere · 09/05/2022 20:13

Sorry, I hate it!

German speaker here (albeit non-native), in my mind it's pronounced "UHKH-s[shwa]l".

And, yes, it is German for "Axis" as in "Axis Powers".

Too many connotations!

toastofthetown · 09/05/2022 21:07

I don't love Axel, though it's certainly rising quickly in the rankings. Not sure how important unusual is to you, but at 168 and rising quickly is something I'd want to be aware of if popularity is a concern.

HouseofGods · 09/05/2022 21:15

Love it. Potentially biased...

Ours is a few years older than the Little Mix baby though. DH mentioned it in passing while I was pregnant and I was like oh it's cool and then we just went from there. I did have a bit of a wobble worrying about the reaction of other people but he really suits the name and no-one has been rude enough to comment on the name to us anyway.

SoManyQuestionsHere · 09/05/2022 21:32

Forget that ... misremembered. It's not German for "axis" ... it IS German for "arm pit".

KangarooKenny · 09/05/2022 21:38

I like it.

Well that was fun! 0 babies called Nigel last year! 😢

Don't love Axel, for me a bit like being called lever 😬

hoomaeyy · 09/05/2022 21:50

Love it!

FawnDrench · 09/05/2022 22:04

Too Guns n Roses and the dreadful anagram...

MissMaple82 · 09/05/2022 22:06

Love it

Ihatethenewlook · 09/05/2022 22:10

Love it

Namele · 09/05/2022 22:12

Another German speaker here and yes it's German for arm pit so it would be a no for me. But if you have no connective to Germany and like the name of go for it. It's easy to pronounce and spell which is a bonus.

Saltnpepperr · 09/05/2022 22:24

Love it

melcalfe · 09/05/2022 22:33

Love it ever since Bobby Axelrod from the billions

Considered for our son but went with another name in the end.

Axe is a nice nickname

Firebird83 · 09/05/2022 22:45

It’s getting very popular/trendy. I’m not keen.

SpaceJamtart · 09/05/2022 23:09

I like it, makes me think of Axolotls

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/05/2022 23:12

Rose. I just think of a hairy bloke with a sweaty crotch doing air guitar, but it’s getting popular I think.

WarrickDavisAsPlates · 09/05/2022 23:21

I've got an Axl, always loved the name and ever since I was young (and obsessed with GnR) I said if I ever had a son he'd be named Axl.

Never had a negative comment on the name (although I appreciate most people would keep that to themselves anyway)

It is getting more popular so may date badly along with all the Archers, Arlo's, Archies etc. But I do think it's a nice strong name making a nice change from the "ie" ending boys names that are everywhere and strangley most of the children from the many baby groups my son goes to seem to remember and say the name really well so it's helped him make a lot of little friends.

PriamFarrl · 09/05/2022 23:27

I taught an Axyl about 7 years ago. He was a lovely boy and the name suited him. It’s not a name I’d choose to be honest but I depends on you really.

Rainbowbaby13 · 10/05/2022 05:31

I love it although I am quite partial to a name with an x in for whatever reason

GrumpyPanda · 10/05/2022 05:48

Nice try (native speaker here). There is indeed an unrelated homonym but that would be "achsel". Really strange association.

Wiki says this for etymology:
Axel arose via Axelen from Absalon (prince of peace), possibly by conflation with the existing name Askel, Askil, medieval forms of the Old Norse name Ásketill, from ans "god" and ketill "cauldron/helmet".[2]

OP it sounds perfectly fine to me.

WinterCarlisle · 10/05/2022 05:53

Love it but then I was planning on marrying Axl Rose when I was a teenager…….

JimLaheysWhiskeyBottle · 10/05/2022 05:54

Quite a popular name here (Norway), a famius and successful alpine skiier too! But it is spelt differently, Aksel. And the pronunciation is slightly different, more if an Aak-sell. I love it and wanted it, but DD was DD and not DS.
