Francisco with Frankie for short

What do you think of the name Francisco?

My DH is Spanish and I am looking at boys names that are fairly easy to pronounce in both English and Spanish.

In Spanish, it's pronounced 'Fran-thee-sco' though the 'th' is very soft.

Does it make you think too much of the city?

In Spain, his nickname may well be 'Fran' - which sounds lovely and quite masculine in a Spanish accent. But in England, I think 'Frankie' is sweet when he's little; and then he could maybe choose Frank or Francis or the full Francisco when he grows older.

His surname would follow the Spanish pattern - so DH's Spanish surname followed by my British surname.

Lovely

No from me. Not keen on Frank/ie

Francisco will be pronounced Fran-siss-co in the UK

I'm Mexican-American so I have a few Francisco's in my family and a few that I have known over my lifetime.

I don't think too many people here put the name and the city together since the pronunciations are different. In England, it could be different. The names here for Francisco are: Pancho, Franco, Frank and Frankie.

Okay will say that the name Fransisco is less common these days and the more popular name is Fernando. However, in England you'll get people singing him the ABBA song. It's like you can't win.

Francisco is fine.

It's a 'si' from me.

I know a guy with this name but he's known as Paco.

I like it, sounds quite cool. Works well for an English/Spanish baby.

Firebird83 · 04/05/2022 17:12

Lovely

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/05/2022 17:17

It's a no from me. It reminds me of the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco.

MaggieFS · 04/05/2022 17:26

I like it, and you are fright it works well for both languages.

I'd just use Fran as a nn in English too if you really want a nickname. It works fine for males or females.

DemBonesDemBones · 04/05/2022 17:32

Absolutely yes!

That does blight the name a bit.

I'm married to a Spaniard too OP and I love it!

Seriously, don’t worry about the Franco thing. No Spanish person is ever going to think of that, they’ll think of their uncle or their cousin or their brother with the same name. It’s a really common name. Plus, English people haven’t stopped using Charles or Oliver because of historical dictatorships or the civil war. And Francisco is as common as those names in Spain.

Plus, young British people in general don’t even know who Franco was, let alone his first name.

Catholics are going to think of St. Francis (San Francisco who the city is named after) who was nice to animals, so that’s a pretty a good connection.

Fran is a great nickname. I like it better than Frankie, to be honest. It sounds calm, pleasant and masculine.

cunningplan101 · 04/05/2022 21:04

Thank you for all your feedback.

I like 'Fran' as a nickname but I have a close female family member named Fran so, with the English pronunciation, it just sounds too feminine to me.

DH didn't seem too worried about the Franco connection, because it is such a common name.

I like that Frankie is unisex but (to me) still sounds quite strong. While Frank has quite a wide range of associations - from Frank Bruno to Frank Sinatra to Frank Churchill (of Jane Austen fame). And 'frank' meaning honest is nice. But if he didn't like Frank, he could also use Francis or Francisco.

But it's so hard choosing a name!
