Mieke

Thoughts on the Dutch name Mieke? I love the sound of it, have a Dutch background and it’s a family name. However I’m concerned about whether it would work in an English speaking world particularly with the spelling but I wouldn’t want to spell it any other way (e.g. Mika)

I know a Meike it’s a really lovely name. I don’t think it’s an issue at all in an English speaking country.

hupfpferd · 29/04/2022 21:24

I assume it's "Mee-kah"?

Makes me think of Rentaghost

I like Meika though "My-kah"

luciatrope · 29/04/2022 21:27

Sounds like the washing machine brand.

Walkingtheplank · 29/04/2022 21:28

I've only known one Meike, pronounced Miker. I think it's lovely but would probably be mispronounced or mis-spelt.

lakeswimmer · 29/04/2022 21:30

I quite like it and know how to pronounce it because I used to work with a Mieke but I think some British people might struggle with the pronunciation.

PierresPotato · 29/04/2022 21:33

I think it would be easy enough for the majority of people to get used to once told how it's pronounced.

RosemaryRosemary · 29/04/2022 21:39

Meike spelling in more commonly used in Germany pronounced MY-keh whereas Mieke is pronounced more like Mee-kuh.

It is a diminutive of Maria

Never heard the name before, I would assume it was pronounced Myk-ee .

Vicliz24 · 29/04/2022 22:16

I know an AnnaMieke ( Dutch heritage) she is pronounced Meekee. I think it's a lovely name

Synchrony · 29/04/2022 22:41

I'd assume it was MEE-kah. Perfectly fine.

IStandWithMaya · 29/04/2022 22:53

I've know Mayke, pronounced My-ka.
Nice name.

sayanythingelse · 30/04/2022 08:44

It's lovely but it does remind me of the film Eurotrip where Scott thought his penpal was a guy called Mike 😅

inappropriateraspberry · 30/04/2022 08:51

Is it a girls name? I would have presumed for boys, like Mike, Mika, Meike.

RosemaryRosemary · 30/04/2022 11:59

Mieke is definitely a girls’ name in Dutch. Although there are similar sounding boys’ names like the Hebrew Micah and Finnish Mika (like the F1 driver Mika Häkkinen)

Sounds good op

Greatoutdoors · 30/04/2022 12:04

I like it. I know a Meike and she’s lovely. I also like Saskia.

JurasicPerks · 30/04/2022 12:09

I know one and would pronounce it your prefered way. BUT, I have to really think every time I write it down, so expect some odd spellings.

KirstenBlest · 30/04/2022 13:53

I know a Meike (Mike-ah)

GrouchyKiwi · 30/04/2022 14:07

I like it, though agree Brits might have trouble with pronouncing it properly (at least the first time).

I'd probably prefer to use Marieke as it makes it a bit more obvious how to pronounce it, IMO.

KirstenBlest · 30/04/2022 14:41

If I saw Mieke, I would probably say Meek or Meeka, but I imagine people would say Mike, Mee-eckeh, Me-ecky, Mikey etc.

The Meike I know gets Mike quite often

pinklavenders · 30/04/2022 15:07

Mieke = Mee-ke

Meike = My-ke

Soggydog · 30/04/2022 15:10

One of the nicest people I knew was called Mieke. Lovely name and nobody ever had a problem with it after being told how to pronounce it.

Micah is Mike-ah
Mike is Micka

KirstenBlest · 30/04/2022 15:12

oops, that should read Mika is Micka

Glowinglights · 30/04/2022 15:18

Mieke and Meike are 2 different Dutch names.
I think people will get the hang of it, as they do with almost all foreign names.
However, I have an unusual foreign first name and it’s a bit of a pain to constantly have to spell it / correct it etc.
Personally I wouldn’t want this for my child (but it is a lovely name)
