What generation of names to we think will come back in fashion next?

I'm thinking names such as:
David, Peter, Christopher, Ian, Kenneth
Shirley, Barbara, Pamela, Janet, Susan

I guess they're names from the 1940s/50s

That was meant to read 'do we think' not 'to we think!'

But then I think of names from the 70s/80s which are due a come back like:

Sarah, Claire, Ruth, Rebecca, Michelle, Leanne
Ross, Stuart, Adrian, Robert, Sean, Adam

Yy to Peter. I don't think that's far off. I don't think Christopher will come back yet as we've only just swung into Kit era.

I'd like to see Jane come back as a first name.

ProudThrilledHappy · 23/04/2022 22:52

Should be hitting the 90s soon enough, there will be a glut of Claires, Gemmas, Rachels and Donnas for the girls.

Ididanamechange · 23/04/2022 22:53

I think an 80's/90s revival is on its way but the more classical names that were popular then so Laura, Nichola/Nicole, Jenny, Sarah, Rebecca, Katherine, Daniel, Andrew, James, Peter, Christopher- I've just realised how popular Saint names were for boys in the mid 80's!

LoudingVoice · 23/04/2022 22:54

I think you’re all missing the Sandra’s, Linda’s, Colins, Patrick’s - we’re nowhere near a 90s revival on names yet

I think you're right. Keep seeing Sarah pop up on this board recently.

Its strange how when I had dd in 2020 Sarah felt really dated but now I can imagine a little baby Sarah again

Can't imagine a baby Colin, maybe Patrick though!

Good point, Debbie and Sally were common in my area at that time too. Lots of Marks, Davids, Stephens and Fredericks too

MichaelAndEagle · 23/04/2022 22:57

Well my dd aged 9 reckons if she has a daughter she'll be called Elaine or Beverly.
If that's anything to go by?

Yes, I agree! So many Sarahs of my generation but would be quite unique now for a newborn.

I know a 5yo (non irish) Patrick.

medicmummm · 23/04/2022 22:58

Baby Nigel Hmm

PeaceLurking9to5 · 23/04/2022 22:58

Oh yes, and names ending in 'da' are going to have a moment. Glenda, Rhoda, Sandra ?

Just feel like less obviously frilly names, harder names, or at least, names that dont all end in 'a' !

Jane and Mary are already creeping up the popularity list

I don't know why but I can't imagine Sandra ever gaining popularity again.

Jane and Mary definitely

How about baby Keith?

dontknowhow2help · 23/04/2022 23:02

I do love sandy for a nn (Sandra). Is Alex still popular? One of my faves. And

Savoury · 23/04/2022 23:03

Mary, Sandra, Audrey, Therese/Theresa, Louise

David, Philip, Derek, Damian, Keith

chesirecat99 · 23/04/2022 23:37

Christopher, Ian, Peter and David aren't 1940s/50s names. All were popular until the 80s, David probably until the 90s (I know a few 90s Davids), Christopher (Chris) was still popular when my DC were born (late 90s, early noughties) then faded away for a bit but is popular again as Christopher (Kit).

I think there is a different "cycle" for classic names and non-classic names.

I think the 70s/80s classic girls names are the next classic names to come into fashion - Louise (top 10 in France), Helen, Sarah, Rachel, Susan/Suzanne/Susannah, Rebecca, Julia, Caroline. Maybe Andrew, Matthew, Jonathan/Jonathon, David, Richard, Mark, Paul, Adam, Stephen, Robert, Simon for boys. I think the next era of non classic, "fashionable" names to come back is from the 50s/60s eg Linda, Carol, Patricia, Nicola, Clare, Howard, Douglas, Clive etc

I also have a theory that the ironic human names 20 somethings give their pets are the next generation's cool names. At least, everyone I knew when I was 20 something had pets with granny/grandad names like Wilf, Fred, Bertie, Alfie, Archie, George, Elsie, Agnes, Maisie, Edith, Mabel. Which, based on the names of all the hipster pets wandering around East London about 10 years ago, means Barry, Gary, Sharon and Tracy are coming back very soon!

GingerDuo · 23/04/2022 23:38

Mark
Andrew
Wayne
Darren
Tracey
Sharon
???
Doubtful!

CruCru · 23/04/2022 23:39

I think old Royal names might come back into fashion - Catherine, Anne, Jane, Victoria, Mary, Elizabeth.

For boys Peter, Edward, Edmund, Philip, Andrew, David, Harold, John, James.

PeaceLurking9to5 · 24/04/2022 00:13

Interesting cat theory.
I can so imagine a cat called Sandra!!

It may well be a 'thing'! I keep a list of potential names for any new cat who happens to stumble into our home (wishful thinking! It's the only way DH would let us get another). I have Derek, Keith, Malcolm, and Nigel on my list. Have now added Kenneth. Obviously our next cat will have to be a boy! I quite like Doris for a girl, but it was my DGM's name so not sure if that would be disrespectful obviously not because cats are much higher beings than mere mortals

Pissyduck · 24/04/2022 00:31

@SkankingWombat I'm so glad I'm not the only one with a cat names list! My current favourites from my list are polly, Mary lou and Vincent.
