Roberta for me.

Honey2 · 13/04/2022 16:15

From your list my favourites are Rowan and Bryony 😊

babyjellyfish · 13/04/2022 16:18

Nigella - no
Magnolia - meh
Thomasina NN Tamsin - OK but not my taste
Bryony - lovely
Amalia - OK
Mary NN Mitzi - Mary yes, Mitzi no
Alexandra NN Andie or Alex - beautiful
Amity - nice
Cosette - no
Bronwen - yes
Anwen - yes
Blanche - no
Alouette - no
Fleur - no
Roberta NN Bobbie - yes
Isadora - no
Rowan - yes

toastofthetown · 13/04/2022 16:23

Nigella - very linked with Lawson and not a pleasant name. A feminisation that didn’t need to happen
Magnolia - I like it. I can see why people say it’s a bit much, but I think it’s pretty. Maggie seems inevitable
Thomasina NN Tamsin - pretty sure Thomasina is Nigella Lawson’s sister! Not my favourite and Tamsin feels very dated to me
Bryony - love Bryony
Amalia - too similar to the ubiquitous Amelia to hold any appeal
Mary NN Mitzi - I quite like Mary, but Mitzi feels contrived. I’d expect it to be dropped after childhood. I wouldn’t want to introduce myself as Mitzi! I love Polly as a Mary nickname
Alexandra NN Andie or Alex - nice name
Amity - not a fan
Cosette - Les Miserables
Bronwen- dislike
Anwen - quite sweet
Blanche - I really don’t like Blanche. Something I do to broccoli rather than something I’d want to name a baby
Alouette - don’t like this one, but I dislike almost every -ette name
Fleur - ok
Roberta NN Bobbie - don’t like Roberta or Bobbie
Isadora - love it
Rowan - I quite like it, though I prefer it for a boy

Mumofgirls2017 · 13/04/2022 16:38

I like Isadora and Roberta not so keen on the rest sorry!

TempsPerdu · 13/04/2022 16:51

That’s an interesting list. Quite adventurous, which I’d normally like, but most of these aren’t to my taste and there are a few real shockers there, notably Nigella, Magnolia and Blanche. The only ones I really like are Rowan, Anwen and Bryony.

ohCARP · 13/04/2022 17:00

Rowan

Whiskeypowers · 13/04/2022 17:04

Bryony
Fleur
Bronwen

I’m not a fan of the others particular Amity unless you’ve going for a homage to retro horror movies

scottishnames · 13/04/2022 17:06

Nigella - pretty plant and I like her recipes, but she is SO well known: 'Were you named after her??' etc etc
Magnolia - paint is first association, but nothing wrong with it. Nice tree/shrub
Thomasina NN Tamsin - You can't dictate nicknames once children get to school. I like Thomasina, but I expect a lot of her friends will try to call her 'Tommy'.
Bryony- Two x 'y' somehow looks contrived.
Amalia - Nice, but as others have said so easily confused with the more popular Amelia/Amelie
Mary NN Mitzi - Mary is lovely and classic; Mitzi most definitely not. Even if ironic and 'sophisticated', it's not a nice name.
Alexandra NN Andie or Alex - Andie is really rather a long way from Alexandra (there's no 'd', for instance). The traditional 'Alix' is much nicer than 'Alex', IMHO
Amity - a bit pioneer/homespun, but a nice meaning.
Cosette - no
Bronwen - This may mean more to people with a Welsh connection, but I've never thought it a very attractive sounding name
Anwen - LOTR?
Blanche - the meaning is a bit bland. Nicer in a French accent, less so in many UK ones
Alouette - 'je te plumerai'. Nasty cruel nursery rhyme about pulling all the feathers out of a skylark
Fleur - Nothing wrong, but I prefer Flora
Roberta NN Bobbie - Roberta is fine by itself; I know two and neither shortens their name. I prefer Berta as a nickname, if you have to.
Isadora - Nothing wrong; not my taste
Rowan - very popular for boys and girls

Favourites would be Thomasina or Tamsin (as a first name, not a nickname), Mary, Alexandra, Roberta

Bellyups · 13/04/2022 17:13

WithANameLikeDaniCalifornia · 13/04/2022 17:25

2000lightyearsaway123 · 13/04/2022 17:30

Nigella- like
Magnolia - no
Thomasina NN Tamsin-love thomasina, don't like tamsin
Bryony - like
Amalia - no

Alexandra NN Andie or Alex - love.
Amity - no
Cosette- no
Bronwen - so so

GoodSoup · 13/04/2022 18:04

Nigella is awful. Mitzi is just a stripper name, terrible. I don’t see how you can get Tamsin out of Thomasina, just call her Tamsin which is also nicer.

Alexandra is the nicest, followed by Amalia.

StStephensTower · 13/04/2022 18:11

As pp says since when was Andie a NN for Alexandra? It’s a bit convoluted but
Alexandra
Sandra
Sandy
Andie/y?!

CruCru · 13/04/2022 18:13

Thomasina NN Tamsin - but to be honest Tamsin is a name in its own right
Mary but not Mitzi
Roberta NN Bobbie

AnnaSW1 · 13/04/2022 18:16

I only like Alexandra from that list

Shannith · 13/04/2022 18:17

@Bellyups

Nigella - no Magnolia - no Thomasina NN Tamsin - no Bryony - ok Amalia - ok Mary NN Mitzi -no Alexandra NN Andie or Alex - ok Amity - no Cosette - no Bronwen - no Anwen - no Blanche - no Alouette - no Fleur - ok Roberta NN Bobbie - no Isadora - no Rowan - no
Well @Bellyups you just saved me typing.

As above, but none of them are that nice, even the ok ones. Sorry!

AuntieStella · 13/04/2022 18:21

Nigella - only if dark (etymology) and only if you can put up with the cooking/flirting associations
Magnolia - no
Thomasina NN Tamsin - I think it's really clunky, and Tamsin doesn't work as a nn, but is nice in its own right
Bryony - lovely
Amalia - ok
Mary NN Mitzi - Mary lovely, Mitzi no
Alexandra NN Andie or Alex - lovely (but Andie is a bit contrived)
Amity - no
Cosette - no
Bronwen - don't much like, but OK
Anwen - ok
Blanche - no, still think of the Corrie character
Alouette - no way, the song makes it risible
Fleur - don't really like
Roberta NN Bobbie - don't really like, butnOK
Isadora - OK
Rowan - like

17caterpillars1mouse · 13/04/2022 18:27

Since Alexandra has 'And' in I didn't think it was such a leap to get to Andie but I see I'm alone in this

OP posts:
cutebutscary · 13/04/2022 18:29

Amity or rowan
Most of the others are a tad luvvie and pretentious

DramaAlpaca · 13/04/2022 18:31

The only ones I like are Alexandra (but not Andie) Tamsin (as a standalone name) and Mary - but definitely not Mitzi, which is awful.

ThatshallotBaby · 13/04/2022 18:34

Favourites are Isadora and Alexandra.
Quite like Thomasina.
Isadora Fleur is very pretty

AntarcticTern · 13/04/2022 18:34

My favourites are Tamsin (just by itself not short for Thomasina), Alexandra and Rowan. Bryony and Roberta are nice too.
