I’m after some good Scottish names

I love eilidh but I’m worried about it being too popular and I love marsaili, but I’m worried about it being too unusual.

I am in Scotland in the highlands so no worries there.

Thanks.

I'm Scottish.

Mirren is the name of my daughter's bully.

Eilidh is lovely but outdated now.

Also outdated are Ailsa and Mhairi (lots of friends in the 80s had those names).

Morag - is that not a cats name from a children's book? V old fashioned too.

Names that are still in fashion include: Skye, Isla, Iona, Arran, Lewis, Harris, Finley,

I do like Marsali and can see that coming into fashion again due to outlander.

CloseYourMouthLynn · 10/04/2022 21:52

We have a Fraser, my husband is Scottish

Chickenwing2 · 10/04/2022 21:56

Ruairidh is such a beautiful name and what I would name a boy. Alasdair is also nice! (I love Archie but prefer for a pet.)

For a girl - Isla, Ainsley, Eilidh, Caitlin and Heather are all lovely.

fullofexcuses · 10/04/2022 21:58

I have an Eilidh. Have always loved the name and was set on using it if I had a girl. There was 1 other Eilidh in her nursery class but we haven't met any others since.
I also have a boy named Finlay.
My DSIL is Scottish living in England and has named her girls Ailsa and Merran.

I also love Mirren, Struan, Euan and Blair.

IHaveaMarsaili · 10/04/2022 22:04

As per username... never been a problem for her, does have to explain the pronunciation, and we're down south.

Have you also thought of Elspeth instead of Ealasaid if Elizabeth's a family name.

Barrawarra · 10/04/2022 22:11

Love Murdo and Morag.

christmasthoughts · 10/04/2022 22:11

I think Mhairi is a beautiful name. My son has a traditional Scottish name mentioned up thread and I love it!

dementedma · 11/04/2022 08:01

Iain is due a comeback, and love Magnus altho I dont think its Scottish.

BrinksmansEntry · 11/04/2022 08:31

I love Freya, although possibly more nordic than Scottish!

Elspeth
Ailsa
Ailie/Eilidh/ailidh/eily are all variations I've seen
Agnes/Senga for the properly old skool

Isobel (rhymes with visible)
Isabel/isabelle
Ishbel

Mairi or Mhairi (varry - although one user on here gets cross about that and reminds people it's only Varry if you are talking about the person and pronounced Mairi talking to them. I know enough mhairi-as-varry to say that hard and fast rule may not be so hard and fast any more!)

I know Rowan is gaining in popularity for girls but it is a really lovely boys name.

Ruairi/ruairidh

Struan
Alasdair
Alexander
James/Jamie

Soul11Soul · 11/04/2022 11:57

There are around 17 million Freya's at my kids school. Freya was a Norse Goddess so not really Scottish. And Mhairi isn't dated. It's classic. 😁

@Namesnamesname123

I really llike the meaning of the name Aodh. but not sure I could call a child Ay lol. It means fire.

I really like Ailsa and Ealasaid. Ealasaid works as a family name is the english version. But i feel like i need something more prouncucable lol

Iagan means little fire. It's a variant of Aodh.

Namesnamesname123 · 14/04/2022 09:17

Iain is not due a comeback lol.

I really like Isobel. My favourite is definitely Elspeth.

Iagan is cool, I like that.

Boys names are difficult.

I love the names Iona or Freya for girls. I have a friend called Ceilidh as well, and that's a pretty name.
For boys I like Arran and Lachlan 😌

Aspidistra1 · 20/04/2022 22:00

Moray/Murray
Corran
Craig
Logan
Brodie

Shona
Flora

Lalliella · 20/04/2022 23:54

Could one call a baby Oban? I fantasise about having 4 children named Iona, Skye, Arran and Oban! (My kids have Russian names, not good atm)

Isn’t a Ceilidh a dance? Didn’t realise it was also a name.

Cloud16 · 21/04/2022 08:14

Eilidh is lovely! Go for it if you love it OP. There's also Ayla.

What about Alba, Iona, or Skye?

greenfly91 · 21/04/2022 09:40

@Lalliella Yes it is a dance, but the name means 'visit' in Gaelic 😊

Thedogscollar · 21/04/2022 22:47

If I'd had a daughter she could have been Mirren just love this name.
Love Lochlan, Rory or Andrew for a boy.

user3199 · 22/04/2022 17:32

I love so many Scottish names but partner is English and we live in England, so our child doesn't have any of them!

My favourites are Mairi, Morven, Ruairidh and Euan. Other ideas...

Eilidh, Ailsa, Catriona, Fiona, Iona, Kirsty, Elspeth, Ishbel, Morag.

Nairn, Struan, Innes, Stuart, Ross, Findlay, Alasdair, Hamish. One of my best friends is called Ross and he is very concerned that there are no new baby Ross's 😂

I also love the Welsh girls name Eira, and the Irish girls name Eimear.

I know of a Barra (man in his 50s)! And I always thought Tiree would make a nice name 😂

OnaBegonia · 22/04/2022 18:12

I have an Eilidh of uni age and she's been the only one all through school, it's not particularly common, there's been none in my younger DC school at all.

Elysant · 23/04/2022 17:31

I love Sorley for its soft sound, but it does sound rather unfortunate.
