Thoughts on Inola for a baby girl?

I think it's pretty
No connection to Enola Gay?

JaninaDuszejko · 06/04/2022 22:41

Is your surname Holmes?

Bunsie · 06/04/2022 22:42

No, no connection. I heard the name a few years back and it was spelt as above with an I and its always been in head since.

Ghostsofhumor · 06/04/2022 22:43

I'd think it was a misspelling of enola

PlasticPlantsDontDie · 06/04/2022 22:44

I know an Inola. She’s lovely. Beautiful name.

hennybeans · 06/04/2022 22:46

I only think of Enola Gay, the airplane that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. Although I recently learned that the pilot named the plane after his mum, so I suppose it is a name. Not that keen, sorry.

Bunsie · 06/04/2022 22:46

Yes quite possibly as I've seen Enola before but never Inola however I think I do prefer the I spelling as it looks a bit softer

Its a no from me, too close to Enola which was the band of the pkane used to drop the bomb on hiroshima

SoupDragon · 06/04/2022 22:48

I immediately think of Enola Gay.

It's a pretty name but I wouldn't use it.

Bunsie · 06/04/2022 22:49

Wow I'd never heard of enola gay until this thread. X

powershowerforanhour · 06/04/2022 22:50

Gay.
Sorry.

Nookable · 06/04/2022 22:52

My first thought was also Enola Gay.

Having googled it it seems to be a Cherokee name? I wouldn't use it unless you or your partner have Native American heritage.

Redshoeblueshoe · 06/04/2022 22:54

I'd have said Enola Gay - but that's showing my age !
Though you have got me singing the song

OhGingleBells · 06/04/2022 22:54

Never heard it before but I quite like it.

Prefer ‘Ilona’ which is very similar and means “queen of the fairies” or “a joy to someone.”

Inola is apparently a town in Oklahoma!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 06/04/2022 23:01

Ilona is really pretty, or Iona?

Justkeeppedaling · 06/04/2022 23:12

How do you pronounce it?
INN-ola or In-OH-la, or come to that, In-oh-LA?

Kite22 · 06/04/2022 23:17

Never seen it with an 'I' but, like so many others, my first thought was Enola Gay, which isn't really something I'd want to name my dd after.

As has already been said, it was originally the name of (I believe?) the person who named the plane's mother, so it clearly was a name before that, but that is what it is remembered for - in the same way that the name Adolf was a name long before Hitler's rise to notoriety, but most people probably wouldn't choose to use it now because of the association.

demoness · 06/04/2022 23:45

Unfortunately it reminds me of the Enola Gay and it does put me off the name. It's an uncomfortable association. I think Nola on its own is very nice though.

Puppyseahorse · 06/04/2022 23:53

I also think of Ebola Gay but (perhaps sadly) I doubt many people in the baby’s generation will know about this and make the association.

Puppyseahorse · 06/04/2022 23:53

LOL, Ebola would be a worse name, probably.

SiobhanSharpe · 07/04/2022 00:44

Unless you pronounce it with the stress on the first syllable, INN-ola , I'm afraid it will sound almost indistinguishable from Enola.
In-OLA / En-OLA.

whatausername · 07/04/2022 01:08

Hiroshima bomber

toomuchlaundry · 07/04/2022 01:12

Singing the song now!

FayCarew · 07/04/2022 08:17

Too similar to Enola (Gay).
If you do use it, May, Grace, Fay or Rae would be a middle name

GoodSoup · 07/04/2022 10:58

Just reminds me of Enola which is also Alone spelt backwards.
