Looking for a middle name for our new DD, Lydia. After a tough pregnancy and entrance to the world I wanted something that means strength/inner strength/warrior/courage/strong feminist vibes - along those lines. I’ve looked myself but not finding anything that jumps out at me so coming to the wisdom of MN for some suggestions!

Matilda means "strength in battle".

Valeria is also a lovely Italian name which means "strong".

A personal favourite for meaning is Beatrice/Beatrix. Websites often say it means "bringer of joy", but that's a folk etymology based on the similarity to Beata "blessed". The original, Beatrix, seems to come from the Latin word Viatrix, meaning "traveller, voyager". (Late Latin often mixed up B/V and I/E.) I think "traveller" is such a wonderful name for a girl - evoking the journey you took to get to her birth, and also all the amazing places she'll go in life!

Thanks so much, all interesting suggestions. I have come to realise that the kind of classic names I tend to like don’t seem to have the strong meanings I would like! I like the Beatrice suggestion, that’s interesting

I don't know if this is what you're after exactly but just listening to a podcast interview between Tami Simon and Mario Martinez and he was talking about the antidote to shame being honour. Shame is debilitating that I am going to suggest the name Honor

Aila has a Finnish origin, it is a girl's name meaning 'from the strong place'.

Valentina/Valentine and similar names like Valerie/Valeria all derive from a Latin word meaning "strong".

Colette is a feminine form of Nicholas which means "victory of the people".

Millicent derives from ancient Germanic words meaning something like "strength through work".

Athena - Goddess of war

Lydia Maude (variation of Matilda - battle worthy)
Lydia Frances (Free)
Lydia Constance
Lydia Eve or Lydia Evelyn (life)
Lydia Gabriel (strength, don’t think it needs the feminine spelling as a middle name, angels being gender free)
Lydia Athene (Ah-thee-nee goes better with Lydia than Athena)

Or - think of a woman you admire

Lydia Elizabeth (plenty of them)
Lydia Eleanor (eg Roosevelt)
