Over- used baby names

Hi all, I'm interested in what the attitude to 'over used' names is. We've had a lot of discussions recently about what to call dd2 (dc3) and a name that is growing on me is Violet. To make things even more exciting, awkward dh is ok with it! However the theme about it is is that it's too popular/ over used. I don't want to call my baby a name that I know lots of other children called, just my personal preference. But how much attention do people pay to this idea of over use? I don't know any other Violets but I know it is not unusual. Does that bother most people or just on the internet?!

I've started other threads about more 'unusual' names but still haven't found 'the one'...

Popular names are not as common as they used to be. In both my child’s classes there is just one repeat name, and neither are top ten names. I think people worry a lot more about names being ‘too popular’ than they need to.

magicstars · 02/04/2022 08:31

Violet is a lovely name & I've not come across any.

StrongerOrWeaker · 02/04/2022 08:31

I think you shouldn't use overused names if this bothers you. If it doesn't, just go ahead.
I don't know any child called Violet 😁

newbiename · 02/04/2022 08:32

Violet is a lovely name. I know a four year old she is delightful.

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/04/2022 08:34

It’s a nice name, and while it’s popular, it’s not on the level of Eve/Isabel/Olivia.

Whether it bothers you or not is a personal thing.

EarPlugAfficionado · 02/04/2022 08:35

Sounds too much like violent to me.

EarPlugAfficionado · 02/04/2022 08:35

Or vile

twomumsonebump · 02/04/2022 08:35

We picked our baby name specifically because it's not overused and we don't know anyone with that name. Working in childcare for 13 years rules out a lot - but I've only ever had one Violet and she was lovely!

musicalfrog · 02/04/2022 08:36

I've never met anyone called this, surprised to hear it's thought of as popular.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 02/04/2022 08:37

It put me off the name Ruby for my second- I remember meeting so many in baby groups with my first- not only was it popular it was popular 3 years earlier, which seemingly put me off even more (dated popularity)

clpsmum · 02/04/2022 08:39

Violets lovely I don't know any

Luluuuuuuuuuu85 · 02/04/2022 08:46

Violent violet, or shrinking violet? Can you be both?!
To me a popular name is a name where I know or know of lots of children with that name, rather than the name lists, though obviously they do match up a lot! My daughter is one of two with the same name in her class, not a super popular one and I know she isn't that keen on it as she is always referred to as name- initial. Around me I see Ella, Evie, Florence, Millie, Emily, Jessica as popular as I know several.

I think you just can't tell which names will be popular in your area. There were two babies called Hamish in a small toddler group I was part of - and we couldn't be further from Scotland. I avoided the name Jack for my now 14 year old because it had been top of the list for so many years but I have actually come across very few Jacks then and now.

numberthirtytwowindsorgardens · 02/04/2022 08:55

I'm a secondary school teacher. I've never taught a Violet.

But then, my son has a top 20 name, so not a priority for me!

Lemonlemon88 · 02/04/2022 08:57

Violet is lovely. Don't overthink it!

whichiswitch · 02/04/2022 08:59

The only violet I know is in her 90s

Greenmoon53 · 02/04/2022 09:05

I don’t think Violet is overused. I don’t know any. Overused names to me are all those ones that end in ‘a’. Like Isla, Ava, Olivia, Mia etc

celestebellman · 02/04/2022 09:11

I only know of one Violet, at my kids' small primary school. Never come across another in any groups/ activities, though it is probably one of these names that is becoming popular and on an upward trajectory.

My daughter has one of the names always mentioned on popularity lists and has never had another in her class, including now at secondary school, or at any extracurricular groups she attends. On the other hand, when she was in reception there were 3 Rosie's in the class..... so it's very hard to predict!

Calmdown14 · 02/04/2022 09:34

Just name her something you like and don't worry about it.
Like others say, it's impossible to tell. My daughter's pre school (of 30 kids) had three kids called Rory. I imagine all their parents thought it wasn't a common name. My son has a classic biblical name that I expected to be common but he's the only one in his school.

Similarly I had a friend adamant her name was to be different so had a Sonny - there are four of them in his school! And yet I'd never met one before but for some reason it was popular in that area that year.

You can't predict the impact of books or TV series that prompt a sudden revival or introduction of a name

Puffalicious · 02/04/2022 09:40

Yup, you never can tell DS1 and DS2, now teens, have always been the only ones in their year/ hobby groups but DS3 who has the most uncommon name of the lot has had another in his class all through primary! You can never tell.

Saltyquiche · 02/04/2022 09:44

Don’t know anyone with that name

StarkintheSouth · 02/04/2022 09:51

Violet is lovely and was a strong contender for our second baby. We ruled it out as it sounded a little similar to our eldest child’s name. It is popular but I have to say at my daughter’s nursery or school I have yet to encounter it. I wouldn’t worry, if you love it just go for it. A friend of mine named her daughter Olivia and then fretted about choosing such a popular name. But when we thought about it we realised we didn’t know any other children with that name!

collieresponder88 · 02/04/2022 09:55

Violet is lovely. I have an Ella. I see on here all the time using Ella as an example of an over used name but my daughter has hardly any other Ella's in her school and I don't hear it very much at all ? Go with violet it's a lovely name

Fleur405 · 02/04/2022 09:59

My sons name was in top 10 in England. Not so popular in Scotland where I am but still quite common. I loved the name and figure it was popular for a reason - I.e. it’s a nice name that lots of people like! Didn’t bother me at all.
