Hi, my husband and I have recently found out we are having a boy and we really like the name Ari. Pronounced Arr-ree (inspired by a character from Entourage my husband loved). I have no issue with people liking it or not, you can never please all people all the time and those who are important to us will get used to it if they arn’t already. My question however, is around cultural appropriateness. Ari is traditionally a Jewish name which we are not. I would be devastated to offend anyone with my name choice for my son. Is it’s culturally in appropriate to call a child a name traditionally associated with another particular culture or religion when you are not a member of that culture or religion? What do you think?
Thank you

I know a girl called Ari

Lilaclavenders · 28/03/2022 14:59

It could be short for Ariana

Pandypuff · 28/03/2022 16:13

It's a Hebrew name yes, meaning Lion, and very popular in Israel. I'd assume you were Jewish to be honest (or maybe a Christian as a lot of Christian use Hebrew names)

FairyCakeWings · 28/03/2022 16:21

I wouldn’t have know that it was a Jewish name, I’d just think you were being unusual.

I think it’s fine to use names from other cultures though, as long as they don’t come with a spelling or pronunciation or both that will make things difficult for the child and people that have to use their name.

SNUG2022 · 28/03/2022 16:27

It just says Frank Bruno to me.

QuizzicalEyebrows · 28/03/2022 16:34

Sounds like Harry with a dropped H

PuffinShop · 28/03/2022 16:38

It's also an Icelandic name, if that helps! In that case it comes from the word for eagle. I think it's a beautiful name, but I don't know if the pronunciation is the same as the Hebrew name.

In Icelandic it's like this: forvo.com/word/ari/#is

SummerHouse · 28/03/2022 16:39

But it's not Ari rhymes with Harry. It's Ari, rhymes with safari.

I think it's culturally / religiously fine.

Maui69 · 28/03/2022 16:40

I'd assume the child was a girl.

demoness · 28/03/2022 17:02

I believe it's a name that exists in several different cultures. Aristotle Onassis was known by Ari to his friends as a shortening of his first name. And he was Greek Christian. According to Behind the Name, Ari is also Norse and Armenian.

I think a strongly Jewish name like Chaim would seem weird if you aren't Jewish. But Ari is more ethnically ambiguous to me.

Thank you for your responses that’s been quite reassuring 🙏🏻

I like it ! ..but also assumed its a girl

Luckyelephant1 · 28/03/2022 21:28

I know an Indian (Hindu) boy named Ari. I love it, but I do think it will often be mispronounced as Harry without the H.

peaceinourtime · 28/03/2022 23:04

Ari isn't Harry with the H not being pronounced properly its A-ri where was Harry with the h not being pronounced right is arry. They sound completely different.
Ari is a lovely name go for it.

AnnaSW1 · 28/03/2022 23:15

I know a boy called Ari. It's short for Aristotle

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/03/2022 03:38

I think it’s fine - can be Jewish or. Nn for Greek names

People will mishear as Harry though

TheWayTheLightFalls · 29/03/2022 04:34

People will hear '(h)Arry imo.

internetpersonme · 29/03/2022 05:11

I love it. Have a Greek friend who goes by 'Ari' short for Aristedes.

SpiderVersed · 29/03/2022 05:17

I’d assume you were Jewish, but I live in a Jewish area so that’s pretty common.

Lilaclavenders · 29/03/2022 12:31

Can be short for Ariane, Ariana, Ariel, Aristotle
