Amalia vs Amelie

Hi I posted before about other names. But now I’ve discovered Amalia too and am confused!

I think my most favourite names are Octavia, Ophelia and Athena but was vetoed by husband.

So now I’ve discovered Amalia and think it has a similar feel to my favourite names.

But I also love Amelie too! I find it so chic and royal as well as forever associated with elegant Audrey Tautou

Amalia vs Amelie? Which one gives you more of an elegant classy vibe as well?

Thank you

Never heard of Amalia and I assume people will always mistakenly think she is Amelia.

I really like Amelie. May you would like Ottilie ?

SpeckledlyHen · 24/03/2022 18:51

Amalia to be sounds like a made up name but it could be just that I have not heard it before. I much prefer Amelie

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 24/03/2022 18:52

Amalia is Italian. Are you Italian or French? If not, don't pick a name that sounds beautiful in native accent but flat and pedestrian in English.

Changethetoner · 24/03/2022 18:53

Amelia is the usual spelling. Very pretty name.

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/03/2022 18:54

I think Amalia will just get constantly confused with Amelia and would be very annoying for her.

I prefer Amelia to Amelie - but they are both nice

Adela, Antonia, Annalisa, Annabella, Arabella, Alicia might be other options?

I've loved Amalia since I was a teen playing Final Fantasy XII, but I think it would be constantly misheard as "Amelia" in the UK since it's a vastly more popular name, which could be irritating for her.

I'm on the fence about Amelie. I liked the film but I don't love the way it would be pronounced in my local accent (am-uh-lee) - the French pronunciation holds more charm for me, but it would be impossible to enforce.

Amalia is a real name, I think one of the Dutch princesses has it? I prefer Amelie in English though. Amalia sounds a bit... i dunno... geographical to me, like a place name?

scandihouse · 25/03/2022 13:40

My friend has an Amalia - she's Austrian. Both lovely

crumpet · 25/03/2022 13:43

How would you pronounce Amalia?

Amaahlia, or AmmaLEEa?

AppleButter · 25/03/2022 13:44

Put simply, Amalia is posh - see the Anna-Amalia library. Amelie is more
popular and accessible, especially after the film.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 25/03/2022 13:47

I much prefer Amelie, Amalia isn't pleasant in my northern accent.

Liv999 · 25/03/2022 13:57

Much prefer Amelie, such a pretty name

FayCarew · 25/03/2022 14:48

Amelie is meh

Is Amalia Am-Ahl-ya or Amal-ee-ah

YellowFlowersForever · 25/03/2022 14:52

Amelie is lovely!

Gowithme · 25/03/2022 15:04

Amelie is lovely, Amalia is not nearly as nice. And even worse you'd probably have people ringing you up and pronouncing it A-male-ia.

delshell · 26/03/2022 07:00

Amelie is lovely. I've not come across Amalia. It sounds nice enough but, as others have said, I think would be confused with Amelia.

I love Amalia. Smile

DogsAndGin · 26/03/2022 09:46

Don’t like Amalia, it doesn’t sound like a name to me.
Amelie is very pretty.

JungleJimbo · 26/03/2022 09:49

How about Annelie?

Xenaaa · 26/03/2022 10:02

I would pronounce it amaaalia.

Amelie is chic, royal, elegant?! It’s the opposite of all of those. Might have been nice once -20 years ago- if pronounced correctly, but time, popularity and mangled accents have done their worst. Go for Amalia. Octavia is nice.

elfran · 26/03/2022 12:24

Amalia is used in Europe and as a pp mentioned, it's the name of the heir to the Dutch throne. It's commonly pronounced Am-ahl-ya, so three syllables, with the emphasis on the middle one. I like it better than Amelie or Amelia, but only if pronounced like this.

If you're going to go for a non-standard pronunciation, I'd prefer Amelie, which feels a bit more casual and wearable in the UK.

CoffeeWithCheese · 28/03/2022 07:39

The one I know is the first version. Unfortunately not a pleasant lady and the name's ruined for me as a result.
