Thoughts on Cassandra?

I had a thread on Cassia, but I'm not sure about it now. I thought Cassandra felt a bit dated, probably because it reminds me of Only Fools and Horses, but it's growing on me now. What do you think?

I’m 30 and OFAH doesn’t spring to mind. I think it’s an underused name, it’s very pretty, and I could see it becoming popular again - but it takes someone to get it back into circulation again!

Prefer Cassia

Cassandra was so tragic, but it’s alright

Snoopdogsbitofposh · 21/03/2022 20:57

I actually really, really like it. NN Cassie is lovely.

@alexdgr8

NO. didn't she predict doom, correctly, but was never believed. not a good association of ideas. pick a sunnier name.
To be honest there are very very very few classical names with only good associations both ancient and modern. It’s just not realistic if you want a classical name.

Daphne? No, absolutely not. Circe? No, absolutely not! Pandora, no, Electra, no, Ariadne probably not.

Firecat84 · 22/03/2022 04:06

Cassandra from Wayne's World - brilliant! I think Cassie/Cassia is probably less dated though.

Roselilly36 · 22/03/2022 06:34

I like it, only ever meet one little Cassandra.,

estoybien · 22/03/2022 18:45

I like Cassandra but I prefer the sound and look of Cassia.

bouquetofpeonies · 22/03/2022 18:52

I went to school with a girl named Cassandra. The nn 'Cassie' is lovely for a girl, very pretty but not twee. It sounds a bit bohemian and arty, but is also good for a more serious girl. And of course it ages beautifully.

Thatswhyimacat · 22/03/2022 21:48

Pop culture wise it's Wayne's World more than OFaH to me.

That said, I do think it's a lovely, classy sounding name and Cassie is a lovely nickname.

Pandypuff · 23/03/2022 05:04

Hate hate hate it! But I adore Cassia. Cassandra so frumpy and dated and naff. Cassia classy, so old but with a fresh feel.

mowly77 · 23/03/2022 05:09

Bad Greek myth

peaceinourtime · 23/03/2022 22:35

it's nice, shorting options aren't confined to just Cassie, Cass which I only heard of recently is lovely.

Caramelcap · 24/03/2022 13:30

Not my taste but love the name Cassie - Cassia is really cool though, I've never heard it before.

SoftSheen · 24/03/2022 13:33

I like it, Cassandra reminds me of the wonderful character in 'I Capture the Castle'. Less keen on Cassie though.

TatianaBis · 24/03/2022 15:42

I think it's a classic.

I never watched Only Fools and Horses and my kids wouldn't know what it was. Babies born now certainly wouldn't.

OnceUponAThread · 24/03/2022 15:57

As a PP said, there are very few classical names (especially Greek) that don't have dark stories attached. That's triply true of female names as women don't do well in myths (or the bible for that matter).

I also think the pop culture is a red herring. No one your daughter's age will have even heard of Only Fools and Horses (or Wayne's World) for that matter.

There are very few names where you can't think of an awful myth / bible story / celeb / person someone knows.

I think it's a nice name. Classic. Pretty. It's not my personal favourite, but I wouldn't bat an eyelid if a friend chose it.

If you like it, go for it. It's a perfectly acceptable name.

If you're not sure about the full Cassandra you could:

Christen her Cassie (tho then she'll probably end up as Cass)
Use Cassia
Use Cassiopeia

There's probably others.
