Adeline - Adie / Edeline - Edie

I'm toying with two similar names for our (potential) baby girl. Love the classic full length 'Adeline' and my partner and I would like to shortened it to 'Adie'. Our conundrum though is around how to pronounce the both the full and NN. Our options to pronounce the name are:

  • Ad-a-line (rhyming with divine)
  • Ad-a-lyn (rhyming with Madeline)
  • Ay-die (rhyming with Sadie)

We also like the name Edie (pronounced Ee-dee), but less keen on Edeline (pronounced Ede-a-line/Ede-a-lyn).

Are views on how to pronounce? I don't want this kid to constantly correct people on pronounciation!

We're from Wales, UK for context!

Adeline is pronounced Ad-ah-line like Caroline, it’s getting quite popular so I don’t think you’ll get to pick a different one. Nns would be Addie or Lina I guess. Ay-die as a nn - you’d be better calling her Ida in that case??

If you like Edie then just use Edith as a full name.

Adelia is another version. Was my grandmother's middle name.

I don't like Adeline and Edeline looks like it's made up

How about Adrienne or Adiadne nn Addie or Adey

NannyR · 20/03/2022 13:42

I like Adeline, pronounced like add-a-line best and I think Addie is a great shortening. Edeline looks a bit made up, I love Edie as a shortening for Edith but it could work as a standalone name too.

Adeline is pronounced Ada-lyn. It is a very popular name in France with the 30-40 yr age group. We have an Adeline, goes by her full name or Adie or just Ads.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 20/03/2022 13:48

Edeline looks weird, and would be shortened to Eddie, surely? Not Edie.

Adaline is lovely. I prefer the -line sound at the end but I know an adult with this name who says hers with a -lean sound at the end so I default to this now.

My advice would be not to fixate on shortenings / nicknames. My dd's short form of her name isn't one we anticipated - it came from her being unable to say her whole name for a while when she was learning to talk. And nicknames can be anything! As they get older they will develop nicknames with friends.

Edie: I'd go for Edith or use it as a standalone name.
Tbh Adeline tends more naturally to Addie as as a shortening.
Aydeline /Aydelin maybe?

dizzydizzydizzy · 20/03/2022 13:50

Adeline ( Add a line) is lovely. I know an Edie and people always think her name is (the boy's name) Eddie.

Hadtocomment · 20/03/2022 13:55

I also prefer Adeline with line. And I love Adey or Addie. I've not heard of Edeline before and don't like it as much but maybe just that I'm not used to it. I think there's a marginal advantage to having a name near the top of the alphabet too so I'd go with Adeline between the two myself.

TrashyPanda · 20/03/2022 13:59

Love Adeline, pronounced Add a line.
Addy is cute.

Don’t like Edeline and not fond of Edie

Edeline is awful sorry but Adeline is now or you could spell it Adelyn. I have to met 2 ever.
