Elena or Elaina? (Pronounced Eh-lay-na)

I'm sorry I know similar threads have been posted before! But I'm still really struggling with DD'S name so would really appreciate some honest opinions.

Elena is more classic and popular but definitely has the problem with variation in pronunciation. Eh Len a (or similar) rather than Eh-lay-na.

Elaina avoids some of the pronunciation issues but is less common/familiar looking. People seem to assume it's spelt Elena when spoken aloud or misread it as Eli-ana.

Aleyna?

I don't think there's confusion with that, is there?

I think op wants the name to start with an El, rather than an Al.

Eleyna?

I would go with Elena, and just clarify the pronunciation.

I speak with some experience - DD has the same name, only with a H in front, and we go with the ‘lay’ pronunciation.

Yes, some people pronounce it one of the other ways on first meeting, but it only happens once.

I’ve encouraged DD not to be one of those people who gets all irate and huffy when someone mispronounces her name. I mean, what’s the point? I have a name which can be spelt a range of different ways, and you just have to accept that it’s unlikely people will default to your chosen pronunciation/spelling. It’s not the end of the world. I would go with Elaina.

Elena will be read as Eh-Len-Na by most EU nationals like Italians, Spanish, Romanian, Greek, German etc.

I found a few links below for you that explain how the name is pronounced in other countries.

Italian:

Spanish:

Romanian:

German:

In all of them and probably many others Elena is spelt as Eh-Len-Na.

It's only in the UK (not even in all regions) that it's spelt Eh-Lay-Na. And keep in mind that in the UK, especially in London, you meet all kind of EU nationals, not just British.

In your case, I would say my DD Elaina if you want this pronunciation.

@JDF1611 I wouldn't say so. If I heard Eh-Lay-Na I would naturally write it down as Elayna or Elaina or Elana (at a push).

When you say "lay" it should be written either as "lay" or "lai" or "la" because this is the sound that correspond to the letters , it can't be just "le" !

As an example the word "letter" is pronounced as Le-tter , it's not Lay-ter. While the word later is pronounced as Lay-ter.

I hope it all makes sense!

I much prefer Elena. Elaina brings to mind Elaine (and minor point but I had to fight my autocorrect wanting to correct it to Eliana). I prefer Alaina to Elaina. I pronounce the first syllable of Elena as É™ so the difference in sound is imperceptible to me, though again, Elena would be my preference.

demoness · 18/03/2022 12:36

I would go with Elena. I think Elena pronounced eh-lay-na is familiar enough (at least to the younger generation) to not cause too many issues. I have heard that pronunciation in American television shows.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 18/03/2022 12:40

I have a Spanish friend called Elena it sounds like Elaina to me when she says her name, so that's the spelling I'd go for. Elaina doesn't look as elegant.

This is true in English, but Elena is not an English name (Helen is cognate with Elena). Letters and letter combinations give different sounds in other languages, and I don't think English pronunciation rules apply in this case.

I think your DD will get a mix of pronunciations and spellings, OP, from people who don't know her, and I think this will happen whichever spelling you choose. This would annoy some people, but not really bother others, so it's up to you. I'd go with Elena personally.

Elena

NatMoz · 18/03/2022 13:09

We have a Yelena and I find it odd when people stick a 'lay' in there. Usually English people. We pronounce it Yel-n-a and would pronounce Elena El-n-a

Littleelffriend · 18/03/2022 13:11

Elena, elena of avalor (song now stuck in head)

Thewindwhispers · 18/03/2022 13:27

Both are lovely, slight preference for Elaina.

RussianSpy101 · 18/03/2022 13:29

I would assume Elena is El-ee-na or El-ena

Definitely not El-ay-na

But Elaina doesn’t like nice at all IMO.

Lilaclavenders · 18/03/2022 13:53

Elaina - That will always be pronounced El ay na.

Elena is often Elen-a.

Lilaclavenders · 18/03/2022 13:55

Elaine or Elaina work better in English
