It reminds me too much of Merlin/King Arthur.
Sorry.

Tamworth123 · 17/03/2022 21:46

@Roselilly36

I don’t like either, sorry.
Can you identify what it is you don't like?

@Saisong

I'd never be brave enough, but I kinda like it.

I know someone with the Welsh version - Gwenhwyfar, but she mostly goes by Gwen

That's the original version AFAIK.

What's wrong with that? Grin

Is it a particular version/production of the story you don't like or ...?

I absolutely love it and feel a bit put out that I didn't think of it in time! Guin and Guinny are great shortenings. A huge thumbs up from me.

@PinkSyCo

Vair upper middle class. Hope you can afford private school as probably be bullied in state school.
@PinkSyCo

Oh don’t be fucking stupid. State schools are full of people called Ophelia and all sorts. Names are much more varied than they used to be.

It’s a nice name Op, and Guin a great nn

BowerOfBramble · 17/03/2022 21:53

I know people with the Welsh version and also the Cornish versions (jennifry and er Jennifer!) but not the English. I think it’s pretty but quite severe - maybe because it rhymes with severe??

TatianaBis · 17/03/2022 21:54

It’s the Gwy sound that I particularly like. It’s very Celtic Welsh.

BowerOfBramble · 17/03/2022 21:54

Worth saying she’s not… Great in the King Arthur legends is she.

StrongerOrWeaker · 17/03/2022 22:02

I find it very harsh to the ear I am afraid

TatianaBis · 17/03/2022 22:02

How do women fare generally in men’s myths…

@BowerOfBramble

Because she cheats on him? I mean as far as I’m aware that’s the only bad thing she does. There’s loads of kids cutting about with names of people who’ve done far worse in the bible/mythology.

And in many retellings (the bbc one, the young adult novels) she’s a very cool character.

BowerOfBramble · 18/03/2022 09:29

Sort of the cheating but apart from that I don’t feel she gets much to do. No doubt the “real” Guinevere types were much more active.

Tamworth123 · 18/03/2022 09:33

@TatianaBis

How do women fare generally in men’s myths…
Exactly.

Richard has been a popular name, made so due to Richard the Lionheart, yet he was famed for brutal, stomach churning violence in "battle", including during the Crusades; which seemed to be as much or more about looting & raping across the Middle East etc. as the "rightful" reacquisition of Jerusalem.

Alexander; due to Alexander the Great who was probably responsible for massive oss of life across various regions of the world.

You could also on all day with this.

Anyway, a brief Google shows that the myths can't even decide who she's married to; it varies between three male characters.

I love it! I also like Iseult, but could not get such names past DH.

Marcipex · 18/03/2022 12:09

I think Ginevra is prettier.

Me too, love both of them. Would happily have had female twins Guinevere and Iseult.

Ooh that's lovely, I hadn't heard of it.
