Here in UK, will name Jacob always going to be shortened to Jake??
Really not keen on nn Jake, Jay or Jack?
Do you think then I should consider different name?

I know loads of Jacobs and none of them shorten their name

I came on to say this. None of the Jacobs I know shorten it, and their nicknames have nothing to do with their actual name.

Kuba? Perfectly fine in English.

Meandthesky · 14/03/2022 11:30

Jacob doesn’t have to be shortened, but I wouldn’t use it if you hate the most likely short form, as you can only influence it to a certain point. Your son may decide he wants to be Jake even if you only ever call him Jacob.

FayCarew · 14/03/2022 14:09

I have a name that my parents insisted was not to be shortened.
Most people call me by the short form. It's not Christine but simiar to Christine/Chris

I have a friend called Jacqueline. She never introduces herself as Jackie but she gets called it by some

Jacob will be shortened to jake whether you like it or not

thebellsesmereldathebells · 14/03/2022 14:11

You can police it while your child is very young, but once they are old enough to have their own friends and opinions, it won't be up to you. Jacob will probably be known as Jay or Jake, and there won't be anything you can do about it.

So I'd choose a name which has shortenings you can live with, or none at all.

Not always, my ds name is easily shortened but he has never been called by the short version. From a young child he did not like it and was happy to ask people to use the full name.
OP if you like the name Jacob you can ask friends, family, school, clubs to not shorten it. You can't control what his friends or other people call him when he's older but that will be up to him by then.

Snowbell99 · 14/03/2022 14:15

I don't know. I think it's avoidable but when he gets older he might choose Jake himself.

I don't think Jay or Jack are likely at all.

To me the name is boring, a bit 90s and very Twilight still.

"Jacob will be shortened to jake whether you like it or not" No it won't *

I have a Jacob. It's never once been shortened to Jake. My exDH calls him J, but in reality that's only because it pisses me off, so it he does it on purpose.
His name is Jacob. He gets called.....Jacob 🤷🏼‍♀️

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 14/03/2022 16:43

I know a Jacob who never ever gets called Jake.

Violetandpurple · 14/03/2022 21:27

I know a few all go by Jake or Jakey

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/03/2022 21:41

Yes. You have to assume it will be shortened, so find something else.
