for some Irish names.

These are the ones on my list:

  • Éadaoin (AY-deen)
  • Aideen (anglicisation)
  • Síofra (SHEE-fra)
  • Aisling
  • Ciara (KEE-ra) and Kiera

These are out:

  • Étaín (simply because I like Éadaoin better)
  • Aoife (I like it but too popular for too long)
  • Niamh (nice but a bit bland)
  • Áine (sounds too much like family member's name)
  • Gráinne (too harsh)
  • Ailbhe (just not a fan)
  • Éabha (too trendy)
  • Aoibh (too bland)
  • Caoilfhionn (nice but not the right sound for me)
  • Sinéad (dated)
  • Siobhán (same)
  • Síne, Síle (dated)
  • Éala, Aodhla (trendy sound)
  • Croía, Fiadh (popular)
  • Caoimhe
  • Saoirse
  • Róisín, Róise
  • Orla etc.
  • Realtín, Reiltín
  • Aifric, Africa, Aignéis, Aingeal
  • Ailís, Eilís
  • Eithne
  • Alannah

Not sure about:

  • Aoibheann, Aoibhinn EE-ven (I like both of these but they are often mispronounced and the mispronunciation seems to be as popular as the correct one)
  • Sadhbh (I do like it but is it too much like "five"? It sounds like SIVE)
  • Meadhbh (one of the main attractions to me is how it looks but it is so complicated and Maeve doesn't have the same appeal)
  • Aileen (pretty but dated?)
  • Saorla, Saorflaith

Do you have more ideas? What do you think of the ones I already have?

Particularly looking for some with interesting meanings, etymologies, backgrounds but anything is welcome.

I don't really like many B or G or D names. I am aware of Deirdre, Bronagh, Bríd, Bride, Brigid, Gobnait, Bébhinn etc.

Difficult, I know, but I would love to find some undiscovered gems from mythology or also word names or anything really.

Any ideas?

A neighbour has just called her baby Siún, I think it’s a beautiful name.

Liv999 · 15/03/2022 14:13

Muireann or Muirne

OwlDoll · 15/03/2022 14:29

Sadhbha is the Donegal version of Sive. It has a much softer pronunciation. Saa-wa

OwlDoll · 15/03/2022 14:30

Or Saidhbhín is the diminutive of Sive - pronounced Siv-een

@MissMatty2hats

I have a neighbour called Siún. I like it too, but English friends hear it as 'shoon' (archaic plural of 'shoes') and find it rather odd.

Clodagh? Dearbhla? Clíona/Clíodhna? Nease? Sorcha? Liadan?

PleaseBeSeated · 15/03/2022 14:40

Sorry, Neasa! Not 'Nease'.

Puppalicious · 15/03/2022 14:44
