Kaia, Kiera, Ciara or Kyra?

These are all on my list but as I could only use one of them (as they sound very similar) I was wondering which one you prefer?

Kyra - KY-ra, really love the soft and warm sound of this but bothered by the missing/unclear etymology and the fact that it seem too trendy.

Kiera - KEE-ra, I love the way this looks but wondering if it could be mispronounced as Kierra or confused with the more common Keira all of the time. It was also popular in the 90s/00s so maybe feels too tired or dated?

Ciara - KEE-ra, I like this too, will it get mispronounced? Too 90s?

Kaia - KAH-ya (or KY-ah, they sound basically the same said quickly to me), I like this a lot but sometimes it feels insubstantial. I also like the Scandinavian spelling of Kaja and Kaya but fear these would get mispronounced.

What do you think?

I like Kaia best.
Have you considered Kylah or Kayla

Kanaloa · 13/03/2022 04:31

I would go with Ciara. I think most people would know how to pronounce it. Kaia is also nice.

Not a fan of Kyra and I think Kiera/Keira isn’t as nice as Ciara.

TheOriginalEmu · 13/03/2022 04:42

@BusinessMindThoughts

Kiera would definitely be assumed to be a misspelling of Keira.

Wasn't there a singer Ciara that rhymed with Tiara?

Kaia is a bit wishy-washy imo with all those vowels! It's not bad though!

Kyra is my favourite I think. I think of Kyra Sedgwick.

The singer Ciara pronounces it Sierra like the car.

@Snowbell99

I am not considering Cara. It's nice but not something I want to use.
Cara is ok....the rest I don’t like at all...all a bit chavvy for my taste
SoonbeSpringtime · 13/03/2022 04:57

It’s interesting how we all have different perceptions, to me the sound of Kyra is the complete opposite of soft and warm. It’s direct and crisp.

The only name I’d consider from the list is Ciara.

Couldyoubesqueakyclean · 13/03/2022 05:22

I know an Irish Ciara and we were in a course together with lots of Americans. Despite her correcting the pronunciation multiple times, they constantly called her Kee-ah-ra (as in rhymes with tiara). So if that matters to you perhaps don’t choose Ciara (which I personally like).

Kanaloa · 13/03/2022 05:30

A name being Irish doesn’t make it ‘chavvy.‘ and for that point denigrating names (or anything else) as being ‘chavvy’ just makes you look stupid and ignorant.

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 13/03/2022 07:32

Ciara or -wildcard - Gaia.

EdgeOfACoin · 13/03/2022 08:02

I like Ciara the best. I've always thought it was a beautiful name.

I also like the Italian Chiara (key-ara), if that's an option.

babyjellyfish · 13/03/2022 09:18

Ciara

Snowbell99 · 13/03/2022 11:15

I don't mind Cara but I don't want to use it.

But personally I find Ciara way more classic than Cara. It's a really old Irish name.

I also don't really understand why they are supposed to be chavvy? In combination because all of the Ks remind people of reality TV (as in the Kardashians)?

But I never watched that show and I would only use one of them anyway.

I mean Kiera is a pretty standard anglicisations along the lines of Aideen or Eileen or Maeve.

Keira is more modern but still fine, I think. Kaja is a Scandinavian name and Kaia is the more international spelling. Kyra (KY-ra) is a bit modern but I still think it's nice.

I would use Keira or Kiera unless in Ireland as the mispronunciation would drive me mad.
I also like Kaia, really pretty and it's probably my favourite.
I don't agree with K name being chavvy, I hate that kind of snobbery. Legitimate names that begin with K are completely fine.

Jacketandbeans · 13/03/2022 12:38

I'm much less keen on Kyra personally.

Me neither. I was just sort of wondering why the other person made that comment because I couldn't really see how these names would be perceived as such.

So I figured they might think so because it reminded them of reality TV as the Kardashians all have K names.

Even though I must say I often prefer Cs.
