Thoughts on Evelyn?

How popular is it where you live?

Do you say EH-veh-linn or EE-veh-linn or EEV-linn?

I always only heard it as EH-veh-linn but recently stumbled across the other pronunciations and now I am wondering if they are common.

Same- only heard it as eh-ve-lynn

I love it but unfortunately DH has vetoed it 😥

TheNonsensePotter · 11/03/2022 14:34

Really popular near me, we know about five with various pronunciations. Its pretty but a bit dull.

Hidingin · 11/03/2022 14:34

I’d say eh veh lin
I love it
Not very popular here

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/03/2022 14:42

It's really nice (as Evv-lyn, Eeve-lyn or Evv-vah-lyn all of which I hear) but it's very popular - and if you take all the Eve,Eva,Ava,Evies and Evelyns together they are overused to the point of ridiculousness. So I wouldn't. Evanna might be an option, but there's a high chance she'd end up being called Evie.

How about Jocelyn, Caitlin, Catrin, Roslyn or Ellen or Elowen?

TheNeverEndingIllness · 11/03/2022 14:45

I know two, one's Ev-lyn the other Eve-lyn both spelt the same though

Hikoridikori · 11/03/2022 14:48

It was one of the two name we shortlisted for my DD. We went for our other choice in the end.

Firstly, I would pronounce it as Ev-Veh-lin.

Secondly, I was put off because of all the Eve, Eva, Evie that are around! I know too many of them and I was afraid that my DD would eventually end up like this...

Thirdly, one MN poster told me that an Evelyn is prone to be bullied at school and be called Evil-Lin ... Confused
Never thought of it before this comment but it stayed with me...

I still love the name though!

SirVixofVixHall · 11/03/2022 15:02

I only know one, 17.
I used to know an elderly lady too.
I love the name Evelyn, it is very elegant.

CruelAndUnusualParenting · 11/03/2022 15:10

For me it's elegant, but it's the name we picked for our eldest, so I am biased. Some might feel it's dated, we associate it a little with the 1920s. It's not too popular, so you won't find there are three other girls with the same name in class. It can be abbreviated to Eve or Lynne. We haven't had much of an issue with "Evil Lynne" type nicknames.

Snowbell99 · 11/03/2022 15:18

I feel like when it's EH-veh-linn it still stands out among Eve, Eva, Evie, Ava. But yes, when it's EEV-linn or EE-veh-linn it really blends in.

Ellen is fine but feels a bit dated to me and also blends in with Ella, Ellie etc. I do like Eleanor.

Oh it is like all the popular names have really similar sounds. But I love them.

Eve-lyn, but I know a lot of Ev-uh-lyns, most called Evie

I'd avoid the Eve type names and the Ellie type names as they have been very popular for quite a while

Unless you love the name.

I like Eve as a standalone name, but not the Eva, Ava, Ivy, Evelyn type ones

AHungryCaterpillar · 12/03/2022 00:05

I say eve lin, not keen on it

DramaAlpaca · 12/03/2022 01:24

I'd say EV-lyn. It's the usual pronunciation in Ireland.

Kitkat151 · 12/03/2022 01:37

It’s pronounced evelin where I am ....it’s very popular in 0 to 3s

Kanaloa · 12/03/2022 01:38

I say eh vuh lin. Except the ‘vuh’ is quite short. I’ve looked after quite a few. Not in the Amelia category but not uncommon, usually a couple of Evelyns at any nursery I’ve worked in recently.

It’s a nice name. Not really many nicknames, I did know one who was sometimes called Evie but it didn’t seem a very natural shortening because the sound of Evie wasn’t in her name how it was said.

SquigglePigs · 12/03/2022 14:46

It was on our shortlist (along with a couple of other names that have been mentioned) but in the end we dropped it because of the pronunciation issue.

RuthW · 12/03/2022 15:07

Eve-lyn for me. Lovely name but the three ways of saying it would drive me mad

Kanaloa · 12/03/2022 15:43

I guess it’s one of those where you need to accept people will sometimes say it wrongly if they don’t know. Like Lucia, which can be Loocheea or Loosseea. If I was to use that name I wouldn’t use it if I really hated one prononciation and knew it would bug me to hear it/corrrect it every time.

blackfOrestgatOh · 12/03/2022 16:13

its very popular in England along with Ava, Evie, Eva, Ivy. All in the top 100. I love Eva but wouldn't use it for this reason.

coffeebabes · 12/03/2022 17:18

It's very popular where I'm from too. And I never know how to pronounce it 😂

Lilacsparkles · 12/03/2022 21:09

It’s the 21st most popular girls name! I would say that’s quite popular…especially as Evie is in the top 20 and that’s a common nickname. It’s nice though, I would say ev-uh-lin

underneaththeash · 12/03/2022 21:12

It's not massively popular where I live. I have a friend pronounced Eve-lynn and DD has a friend at school called Ever-lyn

Kite22 · 12/03/2022 21:21

I know Evelyns with all those pronunciations. I think if you think you will be bothered by your dd being called one of the other pronunciations, it is a name to avoid.

I do think it (they?) is / are nice name(s) though

Sunbird24 · 12/03/2022 21:25

It’s on my list because it’s got family links

chuffoff · 13/03/2022 07:51

I think historically, when it was a popular male name too, the male version was always pronounced Eve-lyn and female Ever-lyn. Both pronunciations seem applicable to the female version now although not sure how you'd ever indicate which when you've gone for so might be a lifetime of correcting it to your chosen pronunciation.

EmilyMK · 14/03/2022 12:01

I say Eve - Lyn and love it 😍
