What do you think of Cormac for a boy?

Is it too harsh? Does it sound dated?

Name decisions are so personal.
It's not one for me I don't like the c sound at the end and I'm sorry I immediately think of caramac chocolate but I think that's just me.
If. You like it use it

lorking · 10/03/2022 18:48

I like it, my friend has one

IstayedForTheFeminism · 10/03/2022 18:50

I like it. I've only ever known one. He's about 10 I think.

DramaAlpaca · 10/03/2022 18:51

I like it. It's fairly uncommon even in Ireland.

M0rT · 10/03/2022 18:52

I like it but depends where you are. Will you be listening to caw Mac for the rest of your life?

TracyMosby · 10/03/2022 18:55

The only association i have as an english person is I immediately think of cormac murphy-oconnor.

WalkingOnSonshine · 10/03/2022 18:59

It’s hands down my favourite name & I try to persuade DH pretty much every day for us to call a future DS it, but he has a distant relative called it!

It just feels very strong to me.

VerveClique · 10/03/2022 19:01

Nice! Very Irish.

JacquelineCarlyle · 10/03/2022 19:03

I love it - my favourite boys name ever! (I like it pronounced CorMACK rather than CorMick)

sittingonacornflake · 10/03/2022 19:12

In Cornwall Cormac is the shambolic company owned by Cornwall council who stuff up every possible highways job they get sent to.

PukkaP · 10/03/2022 19:14

I really don't like it. Sorry

Calandor · 10/03/2022 19:40

Cormac McClaggen. A particularly odious boy in Harry Potter who's always trying to force Hermione to snog him. That puts me off the name.

Depends how much you care about cultural references though.

PilatesPeach · 10/03/2022 19:41

Very Irish Catholic to me - I am a Catholic and have known a number of priests and a bishop with that name but no one else. Don't like it particularly but that is the thing with names - you choose what YOU like OP.

I also thought of Cormac McLaggen.I do admit, it's somewhat of a niche reference though - not like naming your baby Voldemort!

I missed this was in baby names when I saw it in active and fully expected someone to be posting that Cormac had dug completely around their car leaving it on a little island, or undermined their house or something.

I'd avoid it if you're ever likely to relocate to the SW OP.

Oh I had almost forgotten about him! It doesn't bother me so much as he isn't in the books that much. But yes, he was awful.

I love it. My friend has a Cormac. Great name. Strong.

Luredbyapomegranate · 10/03/2022 20:10

I don't mind it. Prefer Caleb though.

Hasselhoffsheadband · 10/03/2022 20:11

My first thought is the Cardinal (it's the Catholic upbringing in me!) and my second thought is Caramac. And it's quite dated, and doesn't really sound that nice.

It's a no from me.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 10/03/2022 20:14

Yes if you ever go on holiday to Cornwall be prepared for endless jokes about does he sit on his arse all day drinking tea etc
It's a shame as actually I think it's a great name if only I lived in any other county.

RuthW · 10/03/2022 20:56

I always see Caramac (the confectionery) for some reason

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/03/2022 20:58

I don't love it, but I don't think it's dated.

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 10/03/2022 21:19

I like it, like Cormac McCarthy. I know of one teenage one (in England).

Sadly, with surnames starting with C, the two C's run into each other and it ends up sounding a bit like korma... But if your surname starts with any other sound, it's ace.

SallyCinnamon3009 · 10/03/2022 21:24

Love it

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 10/03/2022 21:26

I have a cousin called Cormac.

I don't like the Scottish pronunciation of core-mack, only the Irish pronunciation core-mc.
