Anna or Nina

Just that really. We will use one or the other as both are family names that mean a lot to us. We may use the other for any future child. But which for our first? Which do you prefer?

Both lovely names, but I would have to say Anna, as it's my all time favourite girl's name. Classic, timeless, international.

ladycarlotta · 10/03/2022 15:47

Both truly lovely but I would choose Nina over Anna.

danascully96 · 10/03/2022 17:31

Nina! It's got that jazzy shimmer to it that Anna unfortunately lacks. Although, Anna does have better nicknames like Annie and Nancy. But based on the names alone, I find Anna nasally and dull.

Snowbell99 · 10/03/2022 18:12

Anna was extremely common for girls my age growing up. So I am tired of it. If I wanted to use it for a family member I think I would change it to Annabel, that still includes the original name but is more interesting. I spent many years working and studying abroad and this name is everywhere, I know more women named Anna and Maria (in total, all nationalities) than with any other name. So to me it is very very dull. But it's still a classic and less common for kids these days and with a nice meaning. So it's very usable.

I met lots of Ninas during my time in Germany so it's not exciting to me either but I believe it's much less common in the UK so it would be a more interesting choice. I don't like the sound that much.

If you were to combine the two you could get Annina. It's not a favourite of mine but it could be quite nice for someone else and I met an Annina in Germany (ah-NEE-na). I personally would pick Annabel Nina.

But as you asked to choose only between these two I pick Nina.

Anna - an elegant classic and Nancy and Annie are nice nns should she want them.

Also like Annis and Annalise

I think Nina is nothing-y and insubstantial - but it originated as a Russian pet form of Anna so it would be a bit odd to have sisters with the same name

Queenoftheashes · 11/03/2022 01:09

Reminds me of Tekken… I always preferred Nina

Anna or Nina

I prefer Anna, I woudn't choose Nina for second child as too similar.

babyjellyfish · 11/03/2022 15:38

Anna.

Nina is nice too though.

feelingbetternowthanks · 11/03/2022 15:45

Interesting that some see Nina as insubstantial -- I think the strongest association for most people is Nina Simone, who is the least insubstantial person that surely ever walked the planet.

In fact, I think in most movies/TV shows/novels Ninas are usually pretty tough/strong characters. (But I am biased!)

Ludo19 · 11/03/2022 16:00

Anna but I know a nice Anna

thecatwhogotthecream · 11/03/2022 17:15

Anna

DistrictCommissioner · 11/03/2022 22:29

I think both are lovely but Anna has the edge. I wouldn’t call sisters Anna & Nina though - we have both in our close family & people fairly often say the wrong name.

Piggy42 · 11/03/2022 22:32

I really like both names.

Norabuzz · 11/03/2022 22:45

Anna Smile

That was my first thought! I preferred Nina as a fighter.

Anna as a name though.

Lurking9to5 · 11/03/2022 22:49

Anna

I really like Nina but my friend's dog is Nina and although it works for a person or a dog, I think I'd pick Anna because I can't imagine a dog called Anna. I know it doesn't matter though.

soulinablackberrypie · 11/03/2022 23:14

Oh this is hard. I like both, but I think I slightly prefer Anna.

TenThousandSpoons · 11/03/2022 23:17

Both are lovely but I think I’d choose Anna

EverNapping · 12/03/2022 00:03

My girl is Nina, its strong, beautiful with a hint of cute. It's got a lot of compliments.

Nname is either Nini.

She's beautiful and elegant, just like Nina Simone.

(She's also a greyhound and the closest I'll ever get to having a kid, but don't let that put you off)

Alrightqueenie · 12/03/2022 06:49

Anna - very timeless and classy name

babynamelover · 12/03/2022 07:07

I'm totally biased as an Anna but I love Nina too. Offspring is my favorite ever show.

circleglass · 12/03/2022 07:12

Anna.
Nina sounds awful in certain accents (imagine it being shouted across Albert Square!)

UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 12/03/2022 09:26

Nina❤️
