Aris / Ari - Baby boy name?

Hi All,

We are thinking of naming our baby "Aris" or "Ari" as s is optional in our mother language. It's not a British name obviously.

The pronunciation is like Harry without the H.

However, all people say that "aris" is way "arse" is said in cockney.

If this is the case then how can it be that Harry is a very well respected name and never gets mistaken with "ari"?

I am asking as the way the name sounds is pretty much the same as H is barely heard in many dialects...

Is we keep the name as "Ari" and not "Aris" will it solve the problem?

Your opinion and view will be helpful! :)

Well you need to rule out Aris, as it's Cockney rhyming slang for arse (Aris...Aristotle...rhymes with bottle...bottle and glass...arse) sorry.

Ari is fine though.

MaizeAmaze · 08/03/2022 15:29

If you want the sound of Harry without the H, and the S is optional, go for Ari.

I think it's the s on the end make people link it to Arse.
But the Harris never gets that issue (although the H wouldn't be dropped round here).

I have a Greek friend called Aris, sometimes Ari. I think it's a brilliant name, though sometimes if I mention the name people think I'm not saying Harris or Harry correctly and I have to explain. Not a big deal though. No one I know speaks cockney so that aspect wouldn't bother me too much.

Adventing · 08/03/2022 16:14

Ari is fab, I would go with that

Villagewaspbyke · 08/03/2022 16:17

Ari is nice. Often short for Ariel (Hebrew name meaning Lion).

SirChenjins · 08/03/2022 16:21

Ari sounds like ‘arry in a dahn sarf accent - unless you’re pronouncing it A-ree?

I don’t think either work very well with the arse/‘arry connection.

Tinpo · 08/03/2022 16:24

I love the name Ari. I’ve only ever heard it on the show Entourage years ago, but I remember thinking it was a great name.

allmysons · 08/03/2022 16:44

Ari is lovely.

Hikoridikori · 08/03/2022 16:46

That's very interesting! Thank you all!

So, you say that if we miss the ending "s" we are safe to go with Ari!

Fab news :)

If anyone thinks differently, please let me know...

I know you are the only ones that that will give me an honest opinion which I really need!

I’ve taught a number of lovely Arises. Never made the arse association!

MissCarolina · 08/03/2022 17:11

I really like Ari

Hikoridikori · 08/03/2022 18:14

Thank you all!

I am glad that Ari will not be related to aris and arse!

Ari is lovely. Aris is definitely arse to me. (But I grew up in the East End, so perhaps doesn’t have the same association for non-Cockneys)

accentdusoleil · 08/03/2022 18:24

What about spelling Arye?

OtiMama · 08/03/2022 18:28

Personally I love the look of Ari written down as a name but said out loud it sounds like Harry said poorly. I feel a lot of people would presume the child was saying Harry, but maybe just me!

Luredbyapomegranate · 08/03/2022 18:31

Ari is fine.

People will mistake it for Harry, but that’s not the end of the world.

AnnaSW1 · 08/03/2022 19:25

I love Ari!

I do know an Aris (he's called Aristotle) and I've never thought of arse with his name.

Hikoridikori · 09/03/2022 13:04

Thank you all!

I am glad Ari is not associated with arse (cockney aris) and I hope it won't look weird to British eyes... Fingers crossed.

If anyone thinks differently and doesn't like it please let me know!

I really like Ari! It has a nice meaning in Hebrew. There's also a character in the Royal Tenenbaums called it. Some people might mishear it as Harry but it's simple to correct.

For the record, I would never have connected the name Aris with "arse" before reading this thread. I think it would probably only be an issue if you live somewhere where Cockney is widely known/spoken.

HereBdragons · 09/03/2022 13:17

I would have pronounced ´Ari’ with a long ´ah’ sound like in ´car’ rather than the short ´a’ sound like in ´cat’ and ´Harry’. I’ve met a couple of mono-lingual English speakers named Ari and that’s how they pronounced it. It might not bother you and it might not make any difference when you say it in Greek.

londongirl2701 · 09/03/2022 22:49

Ari is a gorgeous name but i only know this to be pronounced like Ah-Ree, it's on my boys list! Halo

Hikoridikori · 10/03/2022 09:24

@londongirl2701 May I please ask if you are British? I am wondering whether this name would be used by British or if it sounds a bit weird/made up name in the Uk?

We are non British and trying to find an “easy” name in the Uk for our DC that also works well in our home language.
