George or Charles, nn Kit?

Which do you prefer for a baby boy?
George
Charles nn Kit

I know Kit is typically short for Christopher but my grandfather is Charles nn Kit so that would be a nod to him. But our family isn’t particularly fussy about naming after relatives so more interested in which you prefer as a name vs as a tribute!

Middle name would be Alexander and big brother is Hugo.

George Alexander

Honestly I think Kit as a nn for Charles is odd and a bit... Unnatural? It seems a little forced and people would probably just call him Charlie. It's very difficult to force nicknames (speaking from experience! I tried, unsuccessfully, before eventually giving in when people just called the baby the most natural nn for her name).

Call him Charles nn Charlie or Christopher nn Kit. It would still be linked to your grandfather but wouldn't require an explanation every time you introduced him/he introduced himself.

Rosieposie101 · 06/03/2022 10:47

My very favorite of the names is Christopher nn Kit. Charles nn Charlie I'm honestly not keen on but it's fine. It's a decent name, just not my favourite. George is okay but a bit overdone and dull recently.

HamCob · 06/03/2022 10:48

They are both lovely manes but to be honest I've never heard of the nickname kit for either so they seem a bit of an odd choice.
Could you not just call him kit?

user772263 · 06/03/2022 10:49

I was concerned about the same thing but I think we’d just introduce him as Kit and keep Charles for formal matters/the birth certificate.

My sister is an Arabella nn Ellie and everyone who is introduced to her by her full name wants to call her Bella, so she mostly just introduces herself as Ellie!

I thought we’d follow the same idea. But Christopher is a lovely name so perhaps another to consider!

Ah just reread and have seen it's just for Charles - I think you would end up with people calling him Charlie or just plain Charles though, especially at school.
SnottyLottie · 06/03/2022 10:51

Out of the two I prefer George.
I don’t think Kit works well for Charles if I’m being completely honest. If you want Kit I would use Christopher or at a push Atticus.
Kit could be an okay stand alone name if paired with the right middle names (Kit Alexander if very handsome to my ears).
George Alexander is also very handsome.

NuffSaidSam · 06/03/2022 10:57

I much prefer George.

I don't like Charles. Kit is lovely but too much of a stretch from Charles, they're just two different names. It would be like calling your older DS Hugo nn Benjamin.

Alexander is also a lovely name.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/03/2022 11:04

I like Kit but it’s too much of a stretch with the Charles thing.

If you have a two syllable last name I’d just call him Kit.

I can’t bear George, but it is popular so probably just me.

tessiegirl · 06/03/2022 11:22

Quite honestly, Kit as a nn for Charles sounds ridiculous.

LaChanticleer · 06/03/2022 11:24

Kit is a shortening for Christopher. People will think you're ignorant about that ...

You're condemning your son to a lifetime of explaining his name.

clpsmum · 06/03/2022 11:25

Why don't you just call him kit? Kit isn't a nickname for George or Charles

EatSleepRantRepeat · 06/03/2022 11:27

Don't forget to tell your older relatives his legal name - if he's in anyone's will they'll have to use it to avoid any dispute. Trying to persuade people that "Kit" in a will is Charles will be really difficult as it's so unusual.

Blubells · 06/03/2022 11:30

think we’d just introduce him as Kit and keep Charles for formal matters

That would be very confusing - people wouldn't know that he's even the same person Confused

Blubells · 06/03/2022 11:32

It's like saying my name is Jane but for official purpose it's Sarah..

SuperSocks · 06/03/2022 11:35

I would either just call him Kit or make his full name Christopher but call him Kit as his everyday name. As Kit is the nod to his grandfather (are you sure Christopher wasn''t grandads' middle name?) you don't really need the Charles bit do you?

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 06/03/2022 11:40

As his formal initial will be C a lot of people will assume he's Christopher.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 06/03/2022 11:42

I would go for Christopher nn Kit, so not directly naming him after grandfather so he can be his own person but keeping the same nickname which afterall is what your grandfather chose to be called. Maybe he preferred Kit to Charles/Charlie.

fungh · 06/03/2022 11:48

Cant Kit be his 2nd name as I know a few people who have their 2nd name as their nick name/name?

Zillamop · 06/03/2022 11:51

I'd go with George. I like Christopher but Christopher Alexander is a bit of a mouthful with all the syllables and two 'er' endings.

Talith · 06/03/2022 11:57

One of the kids friends is Charles and his mum was sure he'd end up a Charlie but nope he insists on Charles always has done. It's hard to dictate a nickname they're usually something that develops organically. I prefer Charles to George.

whatausername · 06/03/2022 12:21

Kit/Charles is way too contrived.

I like Kit best, followed by Charles then George a distant third. Charles will soon be on the throne though so I don't know if that will cause a surge or decline in Charles as a name. If baby being born and Charles ascending are within 2 or 3 years of each other then people may assume the child was named after him. Dates become fuzzy as years go on and at a certain point people won't judge your son's age very precisely. You might not be bothered however!

Regularsizedrudy · 06/03/2022 12:26

I never understand on mn how parents think they will just be able to force random nicknames on their kids.

Ontopofthesunset · 06/03/2022 12:33

It's not forcing a random nickname. It's choosing a name you intend to use on a daily basis. If they call him Kit, that will be the name he answers to and the name he is introduced by. Charles (or Christopher) will just be a name on a birth certificate but it will never be used. For what it's worth I think Christopher would be an easier choice as an official name.

DPotter · 06/03/2022 12:41

I'm a bear of simple brain, and can't get my head around having a name on a birth certificate and calling the child by another unrelated name.

If you want to call him Kit, call him Kit (that's the nod to your grandfather), with official name as Christopher otherwise you and he will be explaining this for the rest of his life
