Greek baby girl names!

We're expecting a baby girl any time now and we still can't decide on a name! We currently like the names Sophia and Lucia.
We know Sophia is extremely popular and worry that Lucia will be pronounced in many different ways which could be annoying.

We would also appreciate middle name suggestions for both :)

Calliope. If you are in the UK it might cause pronunciation issues, but as a middle name it doesn't really matter. Or Hera.

Olympia

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 28/02/2022 10:01

MissBattleaxe · 28/02/2022 10:01

Athena or Aphrodite.

Iris is lovely I think.

Liverbird77 · 28/02/2022 10:21

Greek friend called their daughter Hera. I like it a lot.

mackerella · 28/02/2022 10:30

I know people with Greek connections who are called:

Ariadne
Zinovia
Anastasia
Ianthe
Xanthe
C(h)ristina
Evangelia
Sophia
Olympia
Marina
Melissa
Panagiota (Yiota)
Elena
Ioanna

Some of these are 30- or 40-something adults so I don't know whether they'd be seen by a native Greek speaker as the equivalent of calling a child Claire or Louise in the UK!

NiLunNiLautre · 28/02/2022 10:32

Phoebe, Artemis, Iris, Maia, Sophia, Alexandra, Helena, Cassia, Georgia, Theodora

@midsomermurderess - my ex colleague is called Calliope - Cally for short - it's lovely!

I like Lydia. Works in U.K. too

RosemaryRosemary · 28/02/2022 10:37

Parthinia
Zelia
Eugenia
Delia
Xanthe
Anthea

My stepmum is Cypriot and my half sisters names are Liana and Maria - Iliana or Eliana I think is the long version of the first.

@mackerella - my stepmum is called Evaneglia - Lia for short.

My boyfriend is Cypriot too and his sister is called I can't think of it now - but she doesn't like it and shortened/changed it to Jenny! Boyfriend's cat is called Athena.

For me I like Hera, Phoebe, Ariadne and Calliope best.

@EvelynBeatrice - Lydia is lovely - I knew a girl growing up called that but she's not Greek!

Pelagia (as in Captain Correlli's Mandolin)?

Lydia and Penelope are two of my favourite girls' names also.

RosemaryRosemary · 28/02/2022 10:42

Phaedra

LittleBoPeepHasLostHerShit · 28/02/2022 10:42

Lucia is not really a Greek name. And the Greek version world be pronounced Lukia.

Bumpsadaisie · 28/02/2022 10:45

Phoebe
Thebe
Elena
Christina
Antigoni
Evie (Evgenia)
Joanna (Ioanna)
Thea (Theadora)
Angela (Aggela)
Anastasia
Many greek girls called Evgenia are shortened to Jenny, pronounced a bit more like Tzeni ...

Bumpsadaisie · 28/02/2022 10:46

Oh, Dimitra as well - very popular girls name in Gr.
Catherine is Greek also - Ekaterina/Katerina

Salamander91 · 28/02/2022 10:53

Cora 😊

irishfarmer · 28/02/2022 11:49

Calliope is really beautiful I think.

A pp suggested Clio, while a nice sounding name. There is the Renault Clio, I wouldn't name my DD after a car and a pretty unreliable on at that.

demoness · 28/02/2022 12:11

Depends on if you want "real" Greek names in their authentic forms (e.g. Eleni or Irini or Koralia) or English/Anglicised names that have a Greek origin. Because often those are two different categories IYSWIM. I agree with a PP that Lucia is not really a Greek name - or at least not in that spelling/form.

Larissa

Filthyslattern · 28/02/2022 12:16
