I have a friend called Franca, I love it.

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/02/2022 13:28

Yes, nice

Eloise666 · 27/02/2022 13:47

The Francesca’s that I knew at school were known as Fran or Frannie.

I like the name Francesca and both nn in your OP, but you might not have a choice what the nn is or becomes when outside the house/family.

ThatsNotMyGolem · 27/02/2022 15:13

It's a lovely name in theory but "Fran" is disgusting.

Blubells · 27/02/2022 17:21

Why is Fran disgusting?

It's a natural shortening of Francesca..

harriet465 · 27/02/2022 17:50

I also do not think Fran is disgusting I just loved Franca and thought it was different

I think Francesca is pretty but I think Frankie is a more natural nickname than Franca, which seems a bit awkward to say for me. I don’t see any reason why the sound ‘Fran’ is disgusting at all.

Kitkat151 · 27/02/2022 17:58

I like Francesca
But not Franca🙄.... it’s harsh and ugly

wanttobeehappy · 27/02/2022 18:01

I like Francesca, but don’t think Franca will naturally happen, you’ll have to push it. Franc is much more likely which I think is fine, or cesca which I also don’t mind. Hate frankie.

HomeHomeInTheRange · 27/02/2022 18:14

I like it!

What on earth is ‘disgusting’ about Fran, @ThatsNotMyGolem ? Odd adjective to choose Confused

Jeschara · 27/02/2022 18:20

I like it.

babynamelover · 27/02/2022 18:22

It's my oldest middle. I think Franca as a nn for Francesca is lovely. I also like Frankie ☺️

Geamhradh · 28/02/2022 12:20

Franca as a nickname for Francesca is really really old-fashioned in Italy.
In any case, unless you're going to use Franca and not Francesca from birth, nicknames tend to occur naturally.
Francesca is lovely.

BabyTurtIe · 28/02/2022 12:22

I love the name but hate Frannie which is what a school mum at my kids school calls her daughter, you can’t really control nick names so will most likely be Frankie or fran

The OP isn’t in Italy.

Diminutives (as opposed to random nns) are often planned, eg a Philippa who’s called Pippa by her parents will often remain Pippa for life.

Is Francesca not pronounced Fran-ch-esca, rather than Fran-c-esca?

vesperlindor · 28/02/2022 15:14

I don't think anyone would use Franca naturally unless you basically called her that from birth - I know a few Francescas and they are generally shortened to Fran, apart from one Cesca - Franca just doesn't seem to be a natural shortening (plus it sounds a bit like a currency to me!).

BattMerry · 28/02/2022 15:31

I loooove Franca. Never heard it before, but it's so pretty x

Yes, but Franca is still one of the diminutives. Younger Francescas in Italy tend to be "Fra". I've only ever met one Franca.
JovialNickname · 28/02/2022 15:37

You can give a birth name, but you won't be able to prescribe what her school friends shorten it to. My school friend was nicknamed Franny. Her boyfriend was nicknamed Dick (Richard). So Dick and Franny

WhoppingBigBackside · 01/03/2022 11:36

Makes me think of Fernet Branca
