Too dated?

Is Stephanie too “dated”?
I’m in my early 30s and I only know two and didn’t go to school with any despite it being popular in that era (maybe regional??) Of the two I know one is a couple of years older than me and one in her 60s.
We’re considering it for DD as we like the way it sounds.

I love it.

It's not dated like some of the other names of its era. It's much more classic / timeless to me.

Mrsjayy · 27/02/2022 10:12

Oh I like it, I don't think it's dated at all. The youngest Stephanie I know is in her 20s.

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/02/2022 10:15

I like it, I don’t think it was ever popular enough to be dated, and it’s a traditional feminine of Stephen, so it certainly counts as a classic. She’ll stand out in a sea of Evas and Leilas!

Orphlids · 27/02/2022 10:24

I really like it too. I’d expect Stephanie to be a sensible, intelligent little girl.

CakesOfVersailles · 27/02/2022 10:27

I know several Stephanies from mid twenties to mid fifties.

It's don't know any in their teens or younger but I don't know that it's really dated - I don't think it was popular enough to pin point an exact era the way other names have been. I think it would be find to use, though I wouldn't expect many in her class.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 27/02/2022 10:29

I like it.
I’m 31 and know of 4 my age - so I think it is quite a 90s name. However it’s not “dated”, think it would definitely work now.

RichardsGear · 27/02/2022 10:32

It's a name I associate with big hair and glamour - quite 80s (adult women in the 80s that is). I think this comes from Stephanie Beecham and Stefanie Powers Grin.

Lurking9to5 · 27/02/2022 10:34

I like it. I like some dated names though, Melanie, Jillian, Lindsay, I like the sound of them.

Blubells · 27/02/2022 10:35

Love Stephanie!

It's dated but that's a great thing - it sounds so refreshing compared to all the Ellies, Evies and Sophies

BasiliskFace · 27/02/2022 10:36

I know a Stephanie in her 30s who hates it and goes by her middle name instead, has done since a teenager.
I think it is lovely though!

catinboots123 · 27/02/2022 10:42

Love it and Stevie is a cool nn

TataMamma · 27/02/2022 14:04

I like it. I don't think it's ever been popular enough to be strongly associated with any particular era. She'll probably be the only one she knows, but I think that's always a good thing!

AlwaysLatte · 27/02/2022 14:12

I've always loved that name. Although not too keen on Steph as an abbreviation.

Blubells · 27/02/2022 14:14

She'll probably be the only one she knows, but I think that's always a good thing!

I agree!

CremeEggThief · 27/02/2022 14:14

I know a few, the youngest are in their late teens now. I think it is a lovely, timeless sunny-sounding name. Go for it!

sayanythingelse · 27/02/2022 15:48

It's a nice name but too dated in my opinion, it's very 80's/90's.

I was born in the 80's but I have a very popular 1950's name that's along the same lines and I've always disliked it. It's so dated.

Zillamop · 27/02/2022 16:38

I like it and think it's due a comeback.

DontBeMean · 27/02/2022 16:41

It's a lovely name. I don't think it's out of date. I know a few in their mid 20's. It's a cool name.

felulageller · 27/02/2022 17:28

Not when it has the sound 'fanny' in it

RuthW · 27/02/2022 17:38

Yes it's dated, but so dated it can make a comeback. It's very 70s.

Go for it.

CremeEggThief · 27/02/2022 19:02

Er, most people in the UK would pronounce the first name Stephanie in a different way from (Gwen) Stefani, feulagellar. Steph/a/nee rather than Ste/FANny.

Roseypetals · 27/02/2022 19:11

Glad the general consensus seems to be positive. I see it as more of a classic name as well Smile

Roseypetals · 27/02/2022 19:13

@sayanythingelse that’s my only worry with it, that if it is viewed as an out of time name she’ll really dislike it and wish I’d called her Ava or Ivy or something more popular right now

KylieCharlene · 27/02/2022 19:15

I don't dislike it but it is dated imo -sorry.

Cakecakecheese · 27/02/2022 19:18

If people can call their child Ethel you can call yours Stephanie. I like 80s names. Claire needs to make a comeback.
