Pádraig and Clara siblings

Off the back of should sibling names match.

I'm pregnant with DC 1, I'm 18 weeks and don't know if we are having a boy or girl. We are very sure though we will go with Clara or Pádraig. We plan on having at least 2. So could pan out we have:

Clara & Pádraig
Pádraig & Ruairí
Clara & unknown

Do an English name and an Irish name "match" well together? I think they sound find and both are good substantial names. Also Clara seems to be a lot more popular on MN than I've noticed IRL. It wouldn't put me off choosing it, I've loved it for years.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
ClaudiaWankleman · 22/02/2022 16:35

Irish and English names go well together I think.

Jacketandbeans · 22/02/2022 16:51

I've just started a thread off the back of that one too Grin currently got two DC with Irish names and wondering if I can go off piste for the third. Interested to see what responses you get!

BeefSupreme · 22/02/2022 17:20

My ds is called one of these names. My 2nd favourite name is a Welsh name though. So if I have a 2nd boy my children won't "match."
Your names go fine together.

Thanks ladies. @Jacketandbeans off I go to find your thread now

I don't think names need to 'go' too much. As long as they're names you love that's the main thing. I only know one Irish Clara and she's about 40. Do you think you'll get people saying 'oh that's a very fancy name' (i.e. you've got notions)? Grin

Jacketandbeans · 22/02/2022 20:23

I know an 8 year old Irish Clara living in Ireland. It's number 60 in the Irish name stats so it wouldn't seem out of place I don't think.
I think choose the names you love. I really like Clara.

LizzieAnt · 23/02/2022 09:34

Sounds fine to me too.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 23/02/2022 10:00

I have a Sadhbh and a William (totally outing)- we’re in NI and I like that it makes it harder for people to guess our religious background Grin

People are generally a bit WTF that we have one very Irish name and then one named after King Billy, but it works for us.

irishfarmer · 23/02/2022 11:17

@Classica ah sure I'm full of notions, so no-one would be surprised Grin Grin I'm more worried that people would associate it with the Clara markets, I've never been but used to work with a few people from near there and they don't have the best rep!! But I'd never heard of the town before working with them so don't think it will be a big problem. I love Fionnuala, someone on boards told me they think of "a battleaxe, living in D4 drinking gin" lol

Ah I wouldn't normally have thought about names "matching" just thought about it after that other thread. I think we will def go with one of those name.

Yes fine, it’s very common to mix and match them

Clara is pretty but Fionnuala is FABULOUS

129orbust · 25/02/2022 18:38

What about Proinsias?I love the crunch of it and it goes well with Paidraig and Clara and just as well with Fionnuala.

irishfarmer · 28/02/2022 10:57

@Luredbyapomegranate I think Fionnuala is so beautiful! DH has veto'd it though, I think he thinks it's too complicated. There is just something a lot more umph to Fionnuala to me, but I also came up with Clara as a suggestion so I can't say really complain.

@129orbust I have never heard of Proinsias, I checked the CSO, 1-3 baby boys names that in 1982 so he's floating around somewhere! I don't think it would be for me

LizzieAnt · 01/03/2022 18:39

Proinsias is the Irish version of Francis. I prefer Pádraig though.

129orbust · 01/03/2022 19:34

You've never heard of Mr De Rossa? Are you sure you are a @irishfarmer at all? Grin

irishfarmer · 02/03/2022 10:32

@129orbust ah to be fair I'm only a blow in, an auld townie (small rural town!) Grin Got myself tangled up with a farmer 10 years ago and I've been learning since. My main farm jobs inc being a fancy gate, and telling cattle to move on Grin I can do a lot more honestly! Not allowed right not though DH & MIL think it's too dangerous.

If you like Fionnuala, you might like Fiona (Fionn for a boy) from the Irish and Scottish words for fair/white. 661th place on the names for girls in Ireland last year, 5 girls were given this name. But it's a name that people in the UK will be quite familiar with.

Ciara is a name that would also go nicely with Pádraig, similar sound to Clara.

Clara will work, references the Irish county, Clare (An Clár)
