What do you think of baby name Johannes?

Hi everyone, I'd love your opinion on the name Johannes for our baby due in a few months. My husband is South African and the name is common there but I've never heard it in the uk (the English version is John which we wouldn't choose). We both really like it but not sure if we are setting up our child for constant mispronunciations

Three questions:

  1. Have you heard of the name?
  2. How would you pronounce it?
  3. Do you like it?

Thanks!

Yes
Like the dancer on Strictly!
Yes

pnutter · 20/02/2022 09:36

Love it 😍

Saisong · 20/02/2022 09:36

I like it very much. Would pronounce it Yo-HAN-nes.

I knew a Johanna growing up, pronounced Yohanna. Everyone coped fine.

toomuchlaundry · 20/02/2022 09:36

I’ve heard of it only because of the dancer in Strictly

Bouledeneige · 20/02/2022 09:39

I'd pronounce it Yo han ness

I think most people have heard of it because of Strictly and will think that's what inspired you. As such I'd think it a bit naff. Sorry.

But if you have Dutch or some other roots or it's a family band then id understand it more.

Chasingthewind11 · 20/02/2022 09:42

Ahh interesting I don't watch Strictly so don't know that association but it could be useful if everyone now knows how to pronounce it!

Again I don't watch strictly so never heard it but I would pronounce Yo han ness unless corrected

Three questions:

  1. Have you heard of the name? Yes
  2. How would you pronounce it? Jo-han-iss
  3. Do you like it? Yes as your dh is from SA. No if you have no connection.

Everyone will know the name due to Strictly.

Fivebeanchilli · 20/02/2022 10:35

Yes.
I would pronounce it Yo-HANN-iss.
I like it.

Fivebeanchilli · 20/02/2022 10:36

I've not watched Strictly and I wouldn't think it was naff.

inheritancetrack · 20/02/2022 10:48

Nice and entirely appropriate as your dh is SA

Olga03 · 20/02/2022 10:55

I love this name (my beloved grandfather's name, who's of Dutch-English-German heritage). Every time I mentioned his name towards friends in the UK their reaction have been nothing than positive :)

ImInStealthMode · 20/02/2022 10:59

Three questions:

  1. Have you heard of the name? -Yes
  2. How would you pronounce it? - Jo-Han-Ass or Yo-Han-Ass depending how the owner of the name had introduced them self.
  3. Do you like it? Yes
Luredbyapomegranate · 20/02/2022 14:28

I like it but you will have to put up with some (a lot?) of mispronunciations

If the simple Johan is an option it might save you from so many miss-spellings

But it's a nice name and I'd use it if I really wanted to.

Whydoesthecatalwaysdothat · 20/02/2022 14:49

Yes, I know how to pronounce but you will find that the masses here will say Jo-hanns (a combination of the girl's name Jo and hands without the D).

It could get irritating.

FolkSongSweet · 20/02/2022 14:51

My friend’s DH is South African and their son’s middle name is Johannes (yoHANNiss) - it’s a fantastic name. Love it. Also love John.

givethatbabyaname · 20/02/2022 14:59

I’d think the boy’s parents are proudly German.

Avarua · 20/02/2022 16:31

Its strong and classic. Like it.

TrashyPanda · 20/02/2022 16:40

Love it.
It’s a great name that people from many different countries will recognise.
Would say Yo-hann-ess

You can use Johan, Jan, Hans and Hansi for pet names.

Blubells · 20/02/2022 16:50

I'd say Yo HANN es. 3 syllables

It's pretty popular in Germany

Frazzled2207 · 20/02/2022 16:53

I’d think of the strictly connection
He is jo-hann-iss, I’d think it would be either pronounced like that or yo-hann-iss

Doveyouknow · 20/02/2022 16:55

I would assume German or Dutch connections but would know how to pronounce it and think it's a lovely name. Didn't make the strictly connection.

crosstalk · 20/02/2022 17:42

Go for it. It's a great name and yes, mostly northern European or Boer/mixed race in RSA.

CornishGem1975 · 20/02/2022 17:45

People will forever get it wrong and that would annoy me. I know two people called Johannes. One is a Jo-hannes, one is a Yo-hannes. One is German, one is Dutch.

Chasingthewind11 · 20/02/2022 17:59

@CornishGem1975 That's what I'm worried about. Sounds like there's 2 legitimate ways of pronouncing it, I've only ever heard of Yo- Han-Ess. I suppose we could spell it Yohannes, don't like the look as much though
