How would you pronounce Louis?

I'm a bit stuck as I love this for a baby name, but I have a name where my entire life I've had to correct, or begrudgingly ignore, my name being pronounced wrong.

I had a Mrs Louis teacher in school (pronounced Lewis)
One of my brothers friends was Louis (pronounced Lewis)
And in a job I had a few years ago I worked with a Louis (also pronounced Lewis!)

Dh never heard of this and says that it's pronounced Loo-ey which is how I want the name to be pronounced, but feel like there will be lots of people like me who have heard it pronounced Lewis more often than not

I want to pre-empt this by calling him Louie. I know a Louie who is in his early 30s now and I've known him since he was like 12 so it doesn't look odd to me, and it just takes the pronunciation issue out but my mum is saying it looks made up and weird.

I know a Louis pronounced Lewis
I found it odd at first as I called him loo ee until he told me his name is pronounced lewis

I hear Lewis when I read it, but would say Louis, (lou wee) as that's how most people pronounce it I've found.

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 20/02/2022 14:45

Lou- ee

My son is Louis ( pronounced Louie )
Lewis is spelt this way. X

LondonQueen · 20/02/2022 23:33

I know two, personally I would always pronounce it Lou-eee but one pronounces it Lewis.

jc3215 · 21/02/2022 00:21

Iknow 2 boys both spelt Louis but one pronounced loo ey and one Lewis

greenteafiend · 21/02/2022 01:21

Louis is pronounced "loo-ee." I mean, come on---Louis XIV, Louis XVI, Louis Vuitton, Prince Louis? Even if people slept through history class, you'd think they might occasionally switch the news on or go shopping.

If you spell it "Louie," it screams "My mum doesn't know how to spell." Don't do this!

AlwaysLatte · 21/02/2022 01:46

I would say Lew-ee like the Cambridge's little boy but it could also be Lew-iss as in Louis Armstrong so I wouldn't presume one or the other.

mathanxiety · 21/02/2022 04:57

Louis = Loo-ey.
Lewis = Loo-iss.

Louie = silly.

I’ve always said Loo-ee Armstrong! Am I wrong? Off to check!

I teach teenagers and would say that the preferred pronunciation of Louis until quite recently was about 70:30 Loo-is to Loo-ee. There has definitely been a Prince Louis effect, however, and I think Loo-ee will become the default for the foreseeable future.

FawnFrenchieMum · 21/02/2022 08:20

I’ve always assumed it to be Lou-ee but my DS Lewis was often asked if it was spelt Louis or Lewis!

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 21/02/2022 08:21

Lewie

HoliHormonalTigerlilly · 21/02/2022 08:24

The other way would be Lewis.
🤷🏻‍♀️

Cyberworrier · 21/02/2022 08:36

I've met several women called Louise or Louisa who use "Louie" as a nickname. So I would guess a Louie was a girl if I read the name.
Just spell it correctly!

Synchrony · 21/02/2022 09:08

I'd assume Lewis unless I knew the boy was French. But once corrected wouldn't have a problem with Louey.

Louie looks OK to me. Does remind me of Louie, Dewey and Huey Duck.
