DH is very keen on this name. He has been watching/reading 'The Last Kingdom' by Bernard Cornwall and is a history enthusiast in general. The name is pronounced "Lay-off-rich' on the show with emphasis on the first syllable but I believe "Lair-frich" or "lair-vrich" is more accurate. The name sounds nothing like "Leo". I would probably be saying it "lair-frich". Has anybody met one outside of a history book to confirm this?

I actually like the sound of the name. My concern is that he will spend his entire life explaining how to pronounce his name to anyone that didn't grow up in coventry hearing the lady Godiva story regularly. Also, that it sounds a little like we are trying too hard to be different as it isn't exactly a classic anglo saxon name like Alfred or Edward and therefore sounds a bit fantasy genre.

I already have a girls name in mind thankfully!

You want to call your child “Lay Off Rich” ? It sounds like something said to a sex pest, no?

snowdropsanddaffodils · 19/02/2022 06:24

It's awful

TheUsualShitshow · 19/02/2022 06:24

Lair-frich?

Chalk this one up to first time parents' temporary insanity and move on Grin

SweetPotatoDumpling · 19/02/2022 06:26

No 👍

hulahoopqueen · 19/02/2022 06:30

I would pronounce this either Leo-frick or Lee-off-Rick.
He will 100% spend most of his time trying to explain his name, I'd choose another!
If you're desperate for this one, I'd make it a middle rather than first name!

LifeOfAnxiety · 19/02/2022 06:32

It does.

A couple of years ago I heard someone calling their DC’s name. Several people around didn’t even try to hide their sniggers -I’m aware that says more about them- but I felt very sorry for that poor child. They will spend their life introducing themselves and watching people trying to control their facial expressions.

History buff 🙋‍♀️ i have had to stop myself choosing a historical name. It just wouldn't be fair. Its a lovely name but you have to think of living with that and going through school

AnnaMagnani · 19/02/2022 07:51

No. It's an instant signal that his parents are v weird.

Stuckandinamess · 19/02/2022 07:59

No way. In your post you have set out a number of different ways to pronounce it so of course he will spend his entire life having to explain it. If you did go ahead, I suspect he would in the future:
A)Shorten it to Leo
B)Wonder what had possessed his parents to do that to him

Moonswimmer · 19/02/2022 08:00

I know one! He is nice, clever, quirky, carries it well, and pronounces it Lairfrich as you said.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/02/2022 08:08

Dangerously close to Le Freak for me.

TheVanguardSix · 19/02/2022 08:09

Nope. It's an easy no.

Cocogreen · 19/02/2022 08:14

He will hate you because he'll spend his life explaining it and spelling it.
I have heard of a child with a similar outlandish name tell everyone when he was 8 that from now on he'd only answer to his middle name ( which was John).

scandikate · 19/02/2022 08:22

I would pronounce it Leo- Freak without knowing. I don't like it to be honest

tiredanddangerous · 19/02/2022 08:24

Hell no. Poor kid.

SirChenjins · 19/02/2022 08:27

No - you’re no naming yourself or a pet, you’re naming another person who will spend the next 80-odd years correcting its pronunciation and spelling. It’s an utter pita.

lunar1 · 19/02/2022 08:31

Either you or your husband change your name to that one, give your child a name that isn't a complete burden.

4thtimethecharm · 19/02/2022 08:39

It is a no from me, too, OP. Unless your baby would evolve into the coolest kid ever, who could pull off any name, it is an easy topic to lash onto for a bully. If you are very keen on it, I would go with a very conventional, but nice, middle name that your child could switch to, if it proves too much of a burden.

Soontobe60 · 19/02/2022 08:45

Interesting name! (By interesting, I mean awful) If your DH is set on it, use it as a middle name.

Tsubasa1 · 19/02/2022 08:46

Bit of a mouthfull tbh

Soubriquet · 19/02/2022 08:47

No. I immediately said “Leo-frick?!”

So no

LuluBlakey1 · 19/02/2022 08:47

Horrible name- looks and sounds ugly, awkward and hard to pronounce.

ohidoliketobe · 19/02/2022 08:50

I initially misread it as Leo-rific

liveforsummer · 19/02/2022 09:13

Sorry but it's none of the pronunciations you prefer. It's either the one you've heard or lay off rick/ Lee off rick. Either way it sounds like a cleaning production medicine brand name, not for a human boy.

inheritancetrack · 19/02/2022 09:17

😂😂😂😂 😱
