Thoughts on Lucia?

Currently pregnant with our first child and Lucia has made it's way onto the list of girls names. What do people think?

I'm not sure.
Is it pronounced like St Lucia (Loo-sha)or is it Loo-see-a.
I think the pronunciation would put me off although I like Loo-see-a.

SoupDragon · 16/02/2022 08:49

I assumed Lou chee a

I like it.

Regularsizedrudy · 16/02/2022 08:49

I love this name but I’m never sure if it would get pronounced the Italian way (lu-chia) or lu-see-a which I don’t like as much

NannyR · 16/02/2022 08:50

I know of three different pronunciations which might be confusing, but it's a lovely name and once people know her, pronunciation won't be an issue.

toastofthetown · 16/02/2022 09:03

I quite like it. There is some pronunciation ambiguity (Loo-see-a, Loo-chee-a, Loo-sha) but many other popular names have multiple pronunciations (Eleanor, Helena, Alicia, Mia) and they seem to be fine.

GeneLovesJezebel · 16/02/2022 09:05

Prepare to tell everyone how you want it pronounced.
My DD went to school with a girl called this and in the end she went with Lucy.

M0rT · 16/02/2022 09:08

I love it!

SnakeLinguine · 16/02/2022 09:10

I like it, but as PPs have said, there's the pronunciation issue -- Loo-CEE-a/Loo-CHEE-a/LOO-sha.

SummaLuvin · 16/02/2022 09:11

I actually think it's quite lovely and I'm really not a fan of Lucy - I find it a really wet, insipid name. I would automatically pronounce Loo-chee-ah.

loulou2021 · 16/02/2022 09:19

It's lovely x

LSL0708 · 16/02/2022 09:55

Thanks for the comments everyone.
The pronunciation thing did also cross my mind as a potential problem. We would go with Loo-See-A.

I think it will be a pain for pronunciation

It's traditionally Loo-CHE-ah in the UK (nice)
But in the US LOO-sha (not nice)
And in some European countries Loo-SEE-ah I think (quite nice too)

As it's no longer a common name you seem to hear all of them now.

How about Lucinda?!
Although actually I think Lucienne is the nicest version of the name.

TatianaBis · 16/02/2022 11:49

I prefer the Italian Loo chia to the Spanish Loosy a.

KirstenBlest · 16/02/2022 12:00

Lootcha, Lootch-ee-ah, Lucy-ah, Looce-ya, Loo-cee-ah, Loosha?

Too complicated. Use Lucy instead

thatsnotabadger · 16/02/2022 12:07

Definitely there's the pronunciation thing but you tell people "it's Loo-see-ah" once and that's that. I know Julie pronounced like July and a Sharon pronounced Shay-ron- you generally expect to know how to pronounce those names but once they've told you once then that's that.

Classica · 16/02/2022 12:30

I like it but always read it with the Italian/Mapp and Lucia pronunciation.

ChildOfFriday · 16/02/2022 12:32

It can be a massive pain having to do this with every new person you meet though. I know it doesn't bother some people at all, but others (including me) it really does, and it is sometimes awkward to correct people. I've also found that it isn't always the case that people only need telling once- for most people, yes, but on occasion I've had all three possible pronunciations of my name in one conversation, as well as people telling you you're pronouncing your own name wrongly. Threads on MN asking how people feel about having names with multiple pronunciations often have a significant proportion saying that they find it a PITA, but, as I said, I appreciate that for some people it is only a minor inconvenience/doesn't bother them.
babyjellyfish · 16/02/2022 12:35

It's a nice name, but you will have to tell people which way you want it pronounced.

Have you thought about Lucille?

daisypond · 16/02/2022 12:37

It’s nice, but the Italian pronunciation is the one I would assume.

elp30 · 16/02/2022 12:40

I have a Lucia so I obviously love the name.
I'm Hispanic/Latina so I pronounce it, "Loo-see-ah".
She was born in England and many people pronounced it the Italian way. Sure, there was a bit of time with me correcting people but that didn't last long.

LSL0708 · 16/02/2022 14:39

Thanks for all the responses Smile The pronunciation issue is definitely something to think about. But I think it's staying on the list for now.

Other girls names topping the list at the moment are Eliza (my choice) and Francesca (DP's choice).

Who knew thinking of a name was so hard?!

OP posts:
irishfarmer · 16/02/2022 16:16

I don't like it, but not for any real reason, I don't know why I don't like it. I don't think there is anything wrong with it though either. Guess that is why we aren't all called the same thing!

I prefer you other names, Eliza would be my choice, closely followed by Francesca.
I know picking names is really hard!

UrsulaLittleBear · 16/02/2022 16:25

It’s a beautiful name. I like both pronunciations but would say Lu-see-ah.

Tree543 · 16/02/2022 16:28

I have a close relative called this. No Italian background.Pronounced Loo chee a. I quite like it

AppleKatie · 16/02/2022 16:30

Eliza is a beautiful name, I’d choose that.
