Timeless, classic girls names

I'm still struggling massively with names... I think I would prefer a really timeless, classic name for our girl (and not too short as we have a short surname). A name that won't go out of fashion and doesn't have silly shortenings.

Any suggestions?

@IamnotwhouthinkIam

Timeless girls names are harder than boys in some ways. There are apparently 11 boys names that have never left the top 100 in over a hundred years - but only one girls name (Elizabeth as toastofthetown mentioned). Some that have come close (only left the top 100 for a couple of decades) include Alice, Maria, Catherine and Sarah -but obviously Sarah had that huge surge in the 70's/80's.

Names that feel fairly timeless imo sometimes tend to be ones that are were well used by royalty historically - Eleanor, Anna, Helena, Louisa, Alexandra, Charlotte, Caroline etc. Or perhaps more ancient classical names that have never been in the Top 100 (so it's hard to guess someones age with them) like Claudia, Antonia, Celia/Cecilia etc

I agree with this completely. Some names given on this thread (Hannah, Lucy, Deborah, Judith, Jessica...) while classic, are not timeless IMO

@Latenightreader @Laurie01 we're considering Frances but really don't like the usual nicknames like Fran and Frankie... does your daughter get called by any of those or do people tend to stick with Frances for such a short name?

I was going to say Elizabeth as it's a wonderful name (and mine so I'm biased)

Frances is my middle name. It's also my mums name.

I know one who shortens it to Fran pronounced Fraaan with a long ahh sound.

One thing to consider is that most people don't realise that Frances = female and Francis = male. My mum has lost count of the amount of times people have got her sex wrong because of that. Twice she's been admitted to hospital and placed on a male ward because of it.

@Twizbe whaat - my god that is hilarious! I mean, apologies for laughing, I know about the male/female thing, but you'd think a hospital would be able to know if their patient is male or female!!

You'd think, especially as one of the operations she was having was gynaecology!

But no, that i and E confuses people all the time.

MiracleBaby2022 · 15/02/2022 12:31

@Twizbe incredible... but good to know, thank you!

Anna is my favourite. So simple and elegant.

Elizabeth is the ultimate classic, timeless girls name.

Otherwise I would think of names which have been in use for a long time e.g. medieval and Tudor names: Isabella and Isabel, Eleanor, Catherine/Katharine, Philippa, Bridget, Jane, Margaret, Matilda, Alice, Cecily, Amy, Frances, Anne, Dorothy and Emma. Some are currently popular, others less so.

There's also biblical names like Hannah, Sarah, Mary, Rebecca, Lydia, Leah, Susannah, Esther and Rachel.

Then there's names I associate with the post Tudor era like Caroline, Charlotte, Louisa, Georgiana, Sophia/Sophie, Harriet, Victoria, Henrietta and Marianne.

Plus classical and literary names like Cassandra, Helen, Rosalind, Penelope and Juliet.

My DD is Elizabeth - we chose it to give her lots of choice - and we never actually call her that.
