I like it written down, but if I heard it round here I would assume the kid was called Harris and the parent dropped their Hs.

Namechangeforthis88 · 13/02/2022 21:32

Cockney slang for arse. Why not Harris instead?

LondonReturner · 13/02/2022 21:33

My friend who is Armenian named her son this. I hadn’t heard it before but it has really grown on me since meeting him.

chiickenandchiips · 13/02/2022 21:33

What about Faaris?

Lipsandlashes · 13/02/2022 21:35

Cockneys would call that an arse

Chichimcgee · 13/02/2022 21:35

It sounds like Arse in some accents and like Harris in others I think

Seema1234 · 13/02/2022 21:35

It would sound like someone has dropped the H.

DSGR · 13/02/2022 21:35

Awful, sorry

blyn72 · 13/02/2022 21:36

No.
Aron is nice.

Abrakatabra · 13/02/2022 21:39

It would be spelt as AH-rees. Emphasis on "AH".

Is this what arse is? Oh dear God! Shock

OP posts:
RosieCockle · 13/02/2022 21:40

I thought "arse" as well. And I'm a Midlander.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 13/02/2022 21:40

no no no no no no no

Abrakatabra · 13/02/2022 21:45

Arse to me is ah-rs

While Aris would be ah-rees.

It is not even Ares to make the confusion as it's close to Arse, it's Aris...

I am a bit disappointed now but thank you all Sad

Chichimcgee · 13/02/2022 21:47

Ah-rees sounds even more like arse to me sorry

Lipsandlashes · 13/02/2022 21:53

It’s not that ‘Aris’ sounds like ‘arse’ necessarily. It’s more that ‘aris’ is slang for arse and most people will associate the word with arse.

Abrakatabra · 13/02/2022 21:53

I am not British and obviously my British accent is not perfect.

How is arse pronounced?

OP posts:
MistletoeMeadow · 13/02/2022 21:55

It reminds me of the film Mrs ‘Arris Goes to Paris

Abrakatabra · 13/02/2022 21:57

Also do many people know the cockney slang?

OP posts:
Chichimcgee · 13/02/2022 21:59

Depends on which accent!
Ah - s (short s sound)
Ah - ris (my pronunciation)
Ah - rees (basically elongating the end of the word)

Apandemicyousay · 13/02/2022 21:59

Over the years I’ve worked with two Greek men called Aris. Both absolutely lovely so I associate it with being a great name. I think is short for Aristeidis. Very phonetic and easy to pronounce.

Abrakatabra · 13/02/2022 22:03

Thank you all!

Is also the name Harris associated with arse?

OP posts:
Lipsandlashes · 13/02/2022 22:06

But it’s not even just Cockney. It’s a common association in most of the UK.
A lot of people did/do watch Eastenders and I can definitely imagine a character like Big Mo shouting that she’d “fallen on her ‘aris.”

Lipsandlashes · 13/02/2022 22:07

Basically it comes from the following:
Aristotle = bottle
Bottle and glass = arse
Hence shortened to Aris.

Abrakatabra · 13/02/2022 22:09

Oh my God.... thank you all!

I have no idea what "Eastenders" is, who "Big Mo" is and I don't understand the phrase "fallen on her 'aris"!!!

How will I raise up a kid here? Sad

I didn't even know that the name I chose has an association with arse!!! Thanks mumsnetters!
