Percy as a girls name - thoughts?

Not my bag at all, but I'm watching The Sinner on Netflix and they use Percy for one of the female characters. It's strange how normal it sounds, really suits the character (let's ignore the plot), what are your thoughts?

It’ll be short for Persephone I assume, which is OK, but I don’t think Percy is nice as a first name for either sex, or as a surname for that matter

TrashyPanda · 14/02/2022 09:29

Percy for a girl is totally horrid.

QuinkWashable · 14/02/2022 09:39

I think it's better as a nickname for a girl than as the full name, but I don't see the problem

And this whole 'point Percy at the porcelain' - I have NEVER heard of outside of mumsnet! And lets face it, even if it's common in your neck of the woods, lots of men's names are used as euphemisms for penis!

Most names have associations with things, I really don't think that it's a justification for not using a name if you like it, and I really don't get the hatred of Percy - I think it's cute, and that's why M&S used it.

I like it because of Percy Bysshe Shelley who would be my (unfaithful) DH were we I not already married.

As a nn of Persephone it's cool.

DappledThings · 14/02/2022 19:53

Nope

ellecf21 · 14/02/2022 20:25

Never thought of the connection to Persephone! I haven't checked out how they are spelling it on The Sinner to be fair but maybe that is how they are using it.

We watched it with subtitles and it’s definitely spelt Percy.

merrymouse · 15/02/2022 05:34

I think the problem with Percy is more generational.

I’m fully on board with ‘great granny’ names like Elsie, but I think more time will have to pass before Percy doesn’t just imply an elderly man wearing a cravat.

As a genuine nick name it is fine if it suits the person, but Persephone is also a rather loaded name, given the myth.

LittleGwyneth · 17/02/2022 17:12

I love it as a nn for Persephone, adorable.

Why not Perrie? Similar and a beautiful name

DysmalRadius · 17/02/2022 17:23

As soon as I saw the title I wondered if you were watching The Sinner. I checked to see if there was a reference to a 'full name', but it seems she is just called Percy, which kind of works for her character and the nature of her role, but I'm not sure I would want to lumber a girl with it in the hope that she turned out beautiful and independent enough to carry it off (mysterious disappearance notwithstanding - I'm only on ep 3, so no idea of her actual fate...yet!).

Elspethelf · 17/02/2022 17:24

I love it. I’m not from the UK and haven’t heard of Percy being slang outside of MN.

Ilovetommycat · 17/02/2022 17:28

Only for old men or budgerigars.

DaisyWaldron · 17/02/2022 17:28

I like it. Kids nowadays will associate the boys' name mostly with Percy Jackson, and I know a couple of little girls called Persephone shortened to Percy.

MajorCarolDanvers · 17/02/2022 17:31

Don't. Please.

bouquetofpeonies · 17/02/2022 17:43

I had a female student named Persey. It actually grew on me, and the different spelling does give it a different air from the traditional 'Percy'.

ellecf21 · 17/02/2022 21:19

@DysmalRadius we just finished it tonight! You've got a good few eps to go!

It's absolutely not a name on our list but if someone else used it I wouldn't be offended by it at all, it really works.

Never, ever in ‘real life’ have I heard anyone refer to a penis as Percy.

I think its lovely.

Percy Pig comments could be a thing though Confused

demoness · 24/02/2022 19:20

I like Persephone but I'm not keen on Percy in general. I'm just not a fan of the sound. (Nothing to do with the slang - I've never heard it and I don't think it's used in my area.) Fine for someone else's child though.

Gardeningcreature · 25/02/2022 14:17

Horrible
Bad enough for a boy never mind a girl.
Yes to ‘Point Percy at the porcelain.’ Is a euphemism for taking a piss.

MrsMillhouse · 25/02/2022 14:18

No!!!! My ex called his penis Percy. So no no no

Meandthesky · 25/02/2022 14:36

I really hate the trend to give girls boys names. It just makes me think either the parents were desperate for a boy or desperate to be “unique”. For fictional characters I assume the writer is desperate to be “cool”

I do like unisex/male nicknames like Harry for Harriet, Mattie for Matilda etc though. It gives the girl the option to choose a more feminine alternative later if she wants to without changing her actual name.

BarryKentPoet · 25/02/2022 14:42

It's an awful name for anyone but sweety pigs.
